What kind of fics make you automatically hit the 'read' button? What kind of fic automatically makes you hit the 'back' button?
For me , the auto-reads are amnesia fics and first time fics. y auto-back fics are Mpreg and Human AU's.

I try to read all Spander stories the only exceptions are MPreg and Character Deaths

I'll read just about anything as long as it has Spike as one of the central characters. It can be canon or AU, human or vamp, modern or period piece, and pairing doesn't matter. Me likes Spike. XD

I agree with the first two. Pretty much anything involving Spike can't be bad. Just no mpreg, permanent character death or Buffy involved in an icky way with Spike *shudders*

Of course Spander is the auto read. It has to be the two boys and it's great when there is a long great written plot around the two. But I don't read it if one of the boys dies or Mpreg stories. Human AU's can be interesting but they are usually not my favorites.

I totally have a weakness for consort/bonding fics, heyena fics, and pretty much anything with Xander being a competent BAMF, because Xander is awesomesauce. I won't read human AU's or completely out of character fics. I mean, yes, every character is up to the authors interpretation of them and that's fine; but I mean the ones where Xander starts crying or hurting himself because Buffy or Willow looked at him funny...those I have a hard time suspending disbelief over. Also, they have to be readable. If I can't get through three paragraphs without stopping every sentence to mentally correct things in my head, I have to hit the back button...if only to save myself a migraine. ;)

Spike is my auto read :D I'll read most anything unless it is so poorly written that the plot is unrecognisable. Not that there has to be a plot mind you. *wink*

First times, romance-y themes and similar make go for the 'read' button. But if I see OOC-ness or pretty bad formatting/grammar paired with less than engaging writing I hit the 'close window' button fast. Also non-con-y and/or BDSM-y themes or elements which don't have "equal" partners in all respects make me leave a fic faster than anything. But mostly it's just the OOC-ness. If it's not Spike and Xander but rather Joe 'I like to call myself Spike' Shmoe and his partner Larry 'I go by Xander' Stu I just don't see the point of reading, really, because the adventures of Joe and Larry aren't what I'm hoping for, you know?
Sorry for all the edits; will stop trying to cram in added sense-making now. :)

I'm OK with most pairings. What gets me to hit the back button is poor quality in the writing.

My auto-reads are Spike/Xander and Spike/Angel. Human AUs are my absolute favourites though, and I'll read Spuffy AU fics. If it says Human AU, I'll read it :P
I don't like Souled!Spike (that's my main auto-back) and I'm not that keen on M-Pregs either.

Generally I can't stand saint!Xander or perfect!Xander stories. Yes, he's awesome. I know that. Believe me, he's one of my favorite character of all time. But, at the same time, he has flaws and insecurities and can be just plain awkward and a little morally questionable. He's a total white hat but don't pretend he pisses holy water.
Also, stories where one characters completely disenfranchised and/or dependent on their love interest without any autonomy of their own. It's part of the reason I can never read really long pet!fics. Not unless I see freedom on the not very far horizon. It just bores me to see sassy characters like Xander or Spike or, to look outside this fandom, Dean become these there to be seen, not heard sex toys. Xander's biggest power is his mouth and to see that disabled...? Breaks my heart.
There's more, but they depend on my mood. Sometimes I like angst, sometimes (all times) I like humor, sometimes I like long, sometimes I like short.
