How to remix a fic?

I wanna do a remix to the fic "Family" by Velvet Crypt, using the same characters she had created with the same situation and of course the same pairing. I'm not really familiar with the rules of remixing. Is there an official link to the rules or did someone here remixed a fic and can tell me about those rules?

I can't pretend to be an authority on this since I've never done a remix, but most remixes I've come across have been done through a specific ficathon such as remix redux where authors actively participate and agree to allow one of their stories to be remixed while they remix one from someone else.

If you're wanting to remix a story outside of that kind of formal structure, I'd have thought that the appropriate thing to do would be to contact the original author - in this case, Velvet Crypt, and ask if she minds you doing the remix - especially since she has original characters that are integral to the story in addition to the boys.

Anyway, just my thoughts, hon. I don't know if that helps at all. :)

Thank you! Seeing the recent remixing challenge has inspired me to try and remix a story and Velvet Crypt's story is the only one that inspired me to do so.

I have already sent an email to Velvet Crypt asking her permission to remix her story, but I doubt I will get a response because she hasn't been in Fandom for years now. I thought that I'm gonna wait a month and see if she'll answer me, if she doesn't then I'll have to forget about the idea all together.

I agree with Sparrow. Contact the author, tell him/her your ideas, ask if they would allow it.

If they say no - you're done. If they say 'yes, but, please don't do a', respect their wishes.

If you're interested in remixing as a process and get permission for this or another remix, I would recommend looking at the 'on remixing' tag at remixers lounge. That was the comm which supported remix on LJ.

Good examples are this post by the comm runner, and this comm discussion about how people approached remixing.

No rules, as you're not proposing to be part of a challenge like the remix_redux. But plenty of ideas about what could be done.

Thank you so much. I will check it out right now. :)
