Betas
19th-May-2004 05:22 am
bc mod [literati]
If there is anyone out there interested in beta reading for our resident authors, please add a comment to this thread.

If you sign up and then later change your mind, simply delete your signup comment to remove yourself from the pool of available betas.

If you wish to change any part of your signup details, please delete your comment and repost.

Experience is not essential, but if you haven't beta'd before, you should have at least a couple of decent-sized posts in your journal, un-f-locked so people can view your literacy skills for themselves.

Please copy the contents of the text box below into a new comment and fill in the details as and where appropriate. Thank you.

Signups that do not use the provided template WILL BE DELETED. It's there for a reason.

There is (and has always been) a link to this post on the profile page and on the community page itself under Betas/Writing. There is now also a 'betas' tag for yet another way to find this post.

If you know someone who would like to beta Spander, please send them this way.

Thank you. :o)

June 28th 1020 ETA: This post has been edited and updated, and all beta signups older than a year have been deleted.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR WRITERS AND BETAS

A writer-beta relationship is like a marriage - find the right partner and it can be heaven on earth, but it still takes work. You have to get to know each other's quirks and habits, and negotiate a middle path. You might not 'click' with your first or second or even your third beta or writer, and there's no shame in saying 'I don't think this is going to work out,' or 'You only seem to want an X-type beta and I'm really a Y-type beta,' or 'I know my sentence structure is quirky, but I don't want you to rewrite my whole story'.

Negotiate. Discuss. Explain. KEEP IN TOUCH.

Betas, if your author continues to make the same error again and again, try explaining why it's wrong, and don't be afraid to google to help you do that clearly. If authors continue to send work filled with the same simple mistakes, you have to decide if you're willing to keep correcting them forevermore, or if you want to step away.

If the relationship is not working out for one or both of you, then someone needs to end it, as politely and as reasonably as possible. Then take a deep breath, read a favourite fic, and start looking for your next writer or beta. There will always be one out there, waiting to find you.

Please use the contact information in the comments below to contact your chosen beta. Don't clog up this list with 'Please beta me' comments as I will delete them as I find them.

Thanks!

:D

Name: Mistress_Tien
Preferred genres: I'm not sure what this means. I'll read just about anything and this is a Spander community, so I guess I'm open. I'm ok with AUs, including human AUs, but draw the line if the characters bear zero resemblance to the originals.
Beta strengths: Spelling, word choice, grammar, US English/colloquialisms,
Beta weaknesses: Long-term characterizations. I read a lot of fan fic and occasionally get my "Spike" written by Y mixed up with "Spike" written by Z.
Stuff I will not beta: I'm open-minded to kink, but I reserve the right to refuse any subject.
Experience: (Not essential, but please link, if possible, to one or more works (in any fandom) that credit you as a beta) I've worked with jasonsnene, slashtheboyz, and we-dreamerz on and off over the last three years. I haven't been available to do on-going beta work.
Contact info: mistress.tien@gmail.com
Other fandoms (for crossover purposes): The Sentinel, Stargate: Atlantis, NCIS, Queer as Folk. I know *many* others, so please feel free to ask.
Any specialist knowledge: I lived in So. Cal. for most of my life and have driven through 37 states, so I'm good with roadtrips in the US. I've worked as a journalist, typesetter, cook, caterer, bartender, teacher, editor, programmer, and in retail. My interests include: SCUBA diving, knitting, spinning (as in yarn), dyeing, woodworking, wooden boat building, farming (animals rather than plants).
Any other info: I can often do a "fast and dirty" beta if you catch me at the right time. I'll read it *right now* and get it back to you, drop me a line and I'll help if I can.

Name: whichclothes
Preferred genres: Anything's good
Beta strengths: Grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choice. Also proficient in young Californian. *g*
Beta weaknesses: I'm American. I do the best I can with the English characters, but can't guarantee perfection there. I'm pretty much only up on BtVS/AtS, so probably not a good choice for crossovers.
Stuff I will not beta:
Experience: (Not essential, but please link, if possible, to one or more works (in any fandom) that credit you as a beta) I've done just a little beta work so far. But I'm a college professor so I edit often. *g*
Contact info: dephalqu [at] yahoo [dot] com
Other fandoms (for crossover purposes): none
Any specialist knowledge: psychology, law, very familiar with California and the rest of the U.S. West Coast, have traveled a fair bit around the U.S. and parts of Europe, academia.
Any other info:

Any specialist knowledge: English major, copy editor, musician
Any other info: I also write Spander crossover fanfic

Name: Skargasm
Preferred genres: slash - spander, spangel, etc
Beta strengths: General grammar, spelling, punctuation
Beta weaknesses: Tenses though that seems to affect my fic rather than when I do other peoples!
Stuff I will not beta: Prefer not do het - no major no's but reserve the right to say no if mega kinky!
Experience: (Not essential, but please link, if possible, to one or more works (in any fandom) that credit you as a beta) : I've done a little beta work for a couple of people but not whole stories as yet
Contact info: skargasm at gmail.com
Other fandoms (for crossover purposes): farscape, x files, some supernatural, firefly, dark angel
Any specialist knowledge:
Any other info: Based in the UK so need to be aware of timings. Happy to do fast turn-around sometimes but prefer having a bit of time!

27th-Jul-2010 09:34 am (UTC) - beta
Name: asenath33
Preferred genres:Spander
Beta strengths:Professional editor/proof reader, UK English
Beta weaknesses: Possibly US English on the idiom and product names front. Ok on general vocab as my job entails producing books for the US market as well as the UK one:
Stuff I will not beta: nothing... I think
Experience:I have just beta-d one Spander story, but lots of self editing, plus my job... (Not essential, but please link, if possible, to one or more works (in any fandom) that credit you as a beta)
Contact info:http://asenath33.livejournal.com/992.html#cutid1 or asenath33@livejournal.com
Other fandoms (for crossover purposes) True Blood (writing wip) Er Enterprise (sorry) and Firefly/Serenity is an inevitable story coming up. The Doctor and the Master - current version it tempting.:
Any specialist knowledge: an inexhaustive fount of British 80's tv knowledge (mispent youth), philosophy (not helpful probably) some quantum physics, medieval history (again not helpful.) I have lived in London, Oxford for many years on each part. Have a pretty good knowledge of France, living there on a part time basis. Have travelled widely in Europe and beyond: Spain, Italy, Croatia, Portugal, Ireland, plus the Carribean, Morocco, Egypt and Japan. America only twice so far and on both occasions NYC so not an expert there.
Any other information: not really.

Name: windchild85
Preferred genres: Spander/Spangel. Other BtVS m/m slash is ok, too.
Beta strengths: Spelling, grammar, punctuation, word choice. I'm American - from the Deep South, no less - so the Queen's English is probably not my strong suit, although I did live in England for 8 years (loved it!).
Beta weaknesses:
I've only beta'd for one person (witchway) so far, so don't have much of a resume', yet.
Stuff I will not beta: Nothing outside of Angel/BtVS and no crossovers. No Daddy!Kink or childhood abuse. And I'm **meh** about Het fic.
Experience: I was 5th grade local spelling champ and for most of my life, I've read the dictionary for fun (my nickname in school was "Word Nerd"). I was a proofreader for our base newspaper when we were stationed overseas, and I also proofread my husband's college thesis. In ficdom, I have beta'd a bit of Spander for witchway (please see http://witchway.livejournal.com/77170.html and http://witchway.livejournal.com/77536.html)
Contact info: windchild85@livejournal.com
Other fandoms (for crossover purposes): No crossovers, please.
Any specialist knowledge: Not really.
Any other info: Unless asked to do otherwise, I tend to **only** beta for spelling, grammar, punctuation and word choice. I have, on occasion, been known to suggest a sentence restructuring or two, just to provide better flow. However, I don't make other suggestions (i.e. "Hey, wouldn't it make more sense if Spike did THIS, instead...") because, simply put, it's not my fic. I use text highlighting for all corrections/suggestions for restructuring, so the writer can plainly see those things and make any necessary changes.

Having said all that... I have recently begun writing my own Spander fic. If you would like my input on anything you've written, or would like to collaborate, I'd be open to those possibilities.

Last thing: I'm a working mom with two kids. My fic reading and beta work tend to happen late at night. If you need a quick turnaround, I'll do my best, but I can't always promise it'll happen the same night (especially true for the more epic stories). But I do promise I'll be as thorough as possible!

Name: Tabee
Preferred genres: AU's, H/C, other pairings, crossovers, etc.
Beta strengths: Story consistency, spelling, grammar, sentence structure, helping non-native English speakers, sounding board.
Beta weaknesses: tenses
Stuff I will not beta: Rape
Experience: (Not essential, but please link, if possible, to one or more works (in any fandom) that credit you as a beta) Smut... Halloween Special by Estella Greenleaf (it's RPF) and there's a couple others that were posted on yahoo groups years ago that I don't feel like digging for :p
Contact info: e-mail: pookie404@hotmail.com AIM: KiranaTi83
Other fandoms (for crossover purposes): CSI, NCIS, Van Helsing (movie) Star Wars, Star Trek, X-men, Stargate, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Firefly, and open to others
Any specialist knowledge: History and google :p
Any other info: I usually take at least 2-3 days depending on length for each part I'm given. I read once for spelling and grammar and a second time for over all flow.

Everything I say is a suggestion (unless I say otherwise :p). I mark any changes and suggestions in color and bolded text.

When necessary I put additional notes at the bottom.

I'm a full time grad student, and school comes first, but I'll do my best to get things done on time.

Name: miss_amaterasu
Preferred genres: I do well with all genres, and I enjoy all genres when it comes to Spander fanfiction.
Beta strengths: Grammar, punctuation, word choice, sentence structure
Beta weaknesses: Tenses
Stuff I will not beta: I'm actually pretty open. I'll work with anyone on anything but I do have the right to refuse if I'm just not into the story.
Experience: I've beta'd for several people in real life. I've always helped my friends and a few others out with papers, stories, poems, and things like that. This will be my first time doing beta work online though.
Contact info: xmiss.bonesx@gmail.com or message me on here.
Other fandoms: I enjoy a lot of different fandoms, so you'll just have to ask. I enjoy a ton of Anime fandoms, a few book fandoms, and quite a few television/movie fandoms.
Any specialist knowledge: I start college soon and I plan on having a major in English.
Any other info: I've pretty much summed up what I can do, and I'm willing to work with anyone and everyone... But Tenses in stories really mess with me sometimes. If you have a story like that, you might be better off with someone else. Just being honest!
