6:30 am Saturday morning
Xander Harris has been dead for 7 1/2 hours.
Before the two men had the chance to explore their new found connection,
they heard voices, angry and demanding, as well as footsteps quickly
headed in their direction.
"Damn it Giles, you better be right. I can't believe you hit me!"
"Buffy, calm down. I told you Spike just needed some time and
privacy to talk to.....oh dear"
The three humans stood in front to the naked, bloody men lying on the
floor and Spike could feel a new wave of outrage start to build.
Buffy reached for the stake in the back of her waist band and lunged forward.
"Damn you Spike. You fucking pervert. What the fuck did you do?"
This time it was Xander who threw himself between the slayer and her
intended vampire victim.
"Knock it off Buffy! Leave Spike alone and shut the hell up about things
you don't know anything about."
Shock and silence filled the small room. Shoving Buffy aside, Willow
stepped up gingerly.
"Xander? Is that really you? Are you, um, o.k?"
Xander pulled himself to his feet, totally unconcerned with his nudity, the
cum running down his stomach or the blood dripping from between his legs.
With a huge grin on his face, Xander threw his arms out and stepped
forward to embrace his dearest friend.
"Course it's me. I feel great. Spike kept me. He wanted me. Isn't it
wonderful?"
Willow flinched and took a step backward. Spike quickly jumped to
his feet and pulled Xander back to him.
"Why don't you three go upstairs and give us a few minutes to clean up, yeah?
We'll put ourselves right then join you."
"Yes, of course, right you are. Girls? Why don't we go up to the kitchen
and make some tea. It has been a very long night indeed."
Giles took both the reluctant girls by the arms and led them away while
Xander watched.
The tiny bit of sadness at seeing his past move away from him
was far over shadowed by the man who embraced him from behind.
He leaned back against the other cool body in the room and a feeling
of wholeness that he had never known before engulfed him.
Spike held him snugly, kissing his ear and murmuring.
"I love you, Xander. I love you."
Buffy and Willow sat on stools at the breakfast bar as Giles fussed
around with the kettle and the tin of tea bags. His head was pounding
from the hangover and his heart ached at the loss of a boy he had
considered a son. Unfortunately, like his own father, he had badly
neglected and disregarded the boy until it was too late.
"Giles!"
"What? Sorry, I guess my mind had wandered. What did you say?"
Willow played nervously with one of the tea bags till it tore, spilling
raw, dry tea all over the counter.
"Oh, shoot, sorry. I said, Xander seems o.k. Don't you think?
I mean I wish he wasn't a vampire too, but we don't know what
happened back there and......."
"Well, I know! That fuckin' bastard, Spike, turned him. We sent him
back to save him and the fucker killed him and turned him. I think
we are probably going to have to stake them both. Don't you
agree, Giles?"
"Giles!"
Willow's voice sobbed at Buffy's cold indifference. Begging the older
man for understanding, her damp green eyes looked to him for help.
Giles sighed with disgust and poured the boiling water.
"No, Buffy, you will not be staking either of them. In the first place
you two had no right to do that spell and send Spike back. In the
second place, we don't know what happened yesterday. All we
know is that Xander died. You apparently sent Spike back to save
him, well, it appears to me that he did just that."
The sound of hands clapping turned their attention to the two men
now standing in the kitchen door way.
"Bravo, bravo, Giles. Well said."
Spike sauntered in, his grinning childe in tow.
Without being asked, he opened the freezer and took out all four
blood bags the Watcher had and began warming them up.
"Whot? Just collecting my due."
Xander watched as Giles eyes glanced over at Buffy's low cut,
unbuttoned sweater. Switching to his new game face, he sniffed
the air around the Watcher, and chuckled.
"Naughty naughty watcher."
Immediately Spike smacked him in the back of the head.
"Watch your manners childe."
"Outh! Damn Thpike, you made me bite my tongue."
Willow and Buffy watched intently. He certainly still seemed
like their Xander. Buffy wrinkled her nose. He didn't smell like
Xander.
He smelled like sex and Spike and blood. It turned her stomach
and sent her Slayer senses sizzling.
Willow gingerly placed her hand over Xander's ready to snatch it
back if that was a move not allowed. Spike smiled and nodded.
"We just don't understand, Xan. Why did Spike turn you?
Is this what you wanted? If you were unhappy, why didn't you tell us?"
Xander seldom took his eyes off his sire. The love and devotion that
shone through was obvious to all.
"I didn't call you because I'm not your problem. I'd been lost for a long
time, then, Bam, right out of nowhere, Spike shows up and finds me.
It was just the oddest thing. We ended up spending almost a week
together and in that time, I knew. I just knew what I wanted."
Willow shuddered. She had killed her best friend. By sending Spike
back in time, she had killed him as surely as if she had put a gun in his
mouth and pulled the trigger. She watched him smile and talk and
wondered if maybe she had also saved him.
Giles, too had been staring intently at the new vampire and was amazed.
He immediately began polishing the lenses of his glasses as he asked.
"How is he so aware? I've never known a newly risen to be as
cognoscente as he appears. Did you do something different when
you turned him? Did he somehow retain his soul?"
Spike chuckled.
"Put away your notes, Giles, the boy is not a case study for your journals."
Spike ruffled Xander's hair affectionately and his boy snuggled closer.
"I think it has something to do with the fact that he was turned by two
master vampires working together."
Buffy and Giles were both stunned. Neither had heard of another master
in Sunnydale. Angel was still in L.A, wasn't he?. Buffy gasped. Jealousy
burned inside her and she had to know.
"Who? Who helped you? I thought you turned him by yourself."
Spike laughed.
"I did."
He hopped down off his stool and took Xander by the hand.
"Now, the boy and I are exhausted. It's been a hell of a week
and we need some, um, sleep. So, we are headed back downstairs,
I suggest you give us some privacy, and when night comes, we'll
be gone. Seems the boy wants to see the world and I'm just the
vamp to show it to him."
Willow jumped to her feet.
"Wait, he needs his soul. I can do a spell. I can give him his soul."
Spike stepped in front of his childe protectively.
"NO! He's still himself. He's exactly who he is supposed to be.
'Sides, the boy needs to learn to hunt, to feed and care for himself.
This time you need to accept him for exactly what he is and stop tryin'
to tweek and adjust him to fit your picture of him."
Willow wanted to protest. She wanted Xander to stay with her
Be her old friend and stand by for when she could fit him into her
schedule. She knew that was selfish. She didn't care.
Instead, she smiled and nodded.
Buffy itched to reach for her stake. The feel of two strong, powerful
vampires under the same roof made her skin crawl and her slayer
instincts spark.
"I think I better go. Mom will wonder where I am. I'm, ah, sorry
about everything Xander. I know you think you're happy but this is
just wrong."
Xander watched her leave. It saddened him but he understood.
Sometimes two very different elements simply can't exist in the same
space.
Tugging his childe's hand, Spike got his attention and pulled him into a
heated kiss. The smell of charged pheromones poured from all four
occupants in the small kitchen and Xander decided it was time for some
more sire/ child bonding.
"Well, gotta go, thanks for the tea. If we don't see ya later we'll be in touch."
With that, Xander dragged his laughing master down the steps in into
the darkness.
7:00 am Saturday morning.
