“Pet. Think we’re going about this all wrong.” Spike patted the ground beside him. Xander reluctantly moved toward him. “See…we’re trying to stay together a long time…and that’ll never work.” Xander sighed, trying to hide the blank, hurt expression on his face.
“Well…we can always break up.” They were too dysfunctional to be a couple. Love was not enough. Love was never enough. All it meant was that they were in love. Not that their personalities would allow this love to work.
“No.” Spike patted the ground next to him again. “Come here, please.” Xander laid close to him, but still apart. “Love. Not making things easy.” He moved closer, until he was close enough for Spike to grab and hold him.
“Sometimes, I think we’re better apart than as a couple.” The words were heavy on his tongue. He had never loved anyone more. He had never given so much into a relationship Yet, he had never known a more exasperating individual. “When I just want to be on my own again.”
“But times like this…” He rested his head on Spike’s chest. “I can’t imagine spending my life with anyone else.” He fiercely hid just how much Spike meant to him. He feared the vampire would use it against him, in a fit of rage.
“Ten minutes.” Spike murmured. Xander looked at him, clearly baffled. “Let’s take it ten minutes at a time.”
“Why?” Ten minutes at a time? What would ten minutes at a time do?
“Because it’s easier to get through ten minutes, than ten days.”
It was the sad truth. There was never a way of knowing what kind of day it would be with them. Some days, they were fine. Other days, they spent screaming at each other. Yet, they always came together again.
“I love you.” Xander murmured. He gripped Spike’s hand, and then, lightly nuzzled his neck.
“Love you, too, Pet.” he whispered. “Just wish we could stay together.” He sighed. “Can’t imagine being with anyone else though.” Xander sighed.
“Neither can I.” Xander said. “Who else accepts me, missing eye and all?” Spike laughed softly.
“Who else deals with me never rinsing bloody mugs?” he whispered. “Sometimes, I think we’re meant to be together.” He sighed. “So…the next ten minutes?”
“What happens if we get through the next ten minutes?”
“Go ten minutes more.” Spike stifled a sigh. He gently kissed Xander’s cheek. “Don’t want to live without you.” Xander nibbled on his lower lip. Was he serious? “If we survive ten minutes, we should keep trying. Ten minutes eventually becomes a lifetime.” Xander blinked.
“What if I’m late? What if we lose minutes?” Xander couldn’t find the words to say what he wanted to say. “Does it really eventually become a lifetime?”
“If you‘re late, Be here always, Pet. If we lose minutes, we go ten from the minutes we lost and yes…” He wrapped his arms tighter around him. “We make it into a lifetime.” He lightly pressed his lips against Xander’s mouth in a chaste kiss. “Be mine for a lifetime of ten minutes?”
