Xander glanced around, the crowds near him overwhelming him. He hated crowds, after becoming claustrophobic in his old age. Too many years of dealing with vampires and things that generally go bump in the night…
“Excuse me!” he called, hoping someone would answer him. “Hello!” People just rushed past him. Someone grasped him by the shoulder. He jerked around, to find himself at eye level with Spike.
“Don’t get yourself trampled. Pet,” Spike said, tugging on his sleeve. “Come with me.” Xander stopped, as the crowd thinned out.
“Where am I and why do I have both eyes?” he asked, glancing around. Spike chortled.
“Welcome to Heaven!” he exclaimed, grinning. “Been waiting forever or so it seems. Didn’t think you’d ever get here.”
Xander backed away, startled by Spike’s cheeriness.
“Who are you?” Xander asked, puzzled. “My Spike’s never this cheery.” Spike glanced to an old man, with a long white beard. The man pointed his thumb towards a series of doors.
“Thanks, Pete,” Spike called, still pulling Xander by the sleeve. “That’s Saint Peter, and these are conference rooms.” As soon as they were out of sight, he pulled Xander into a tight hug. “You don’t know how long I’ve wanted to do that.” Xander pulled away uncertainly.
“What’s going on?” he asked. Spike led him to a chair.
“You may want to sit down,” he said, waiting for Xander to sit. “You’re probably not going to believe me.” He proceeded to tell Xander just what had happened. “It was the best sunrise of my life.”
“You expect me to believe that?” Xander asked. “That I forgot you?”
“Tis only the truth, Pet,” Spike smiled sadly. “You were actually afraid of me. Thought you were sixteen and I was the big bad,”
“I can’t believe that,” Xander shook his head in wonder, settling on Spike’s lap. “How could I be afraid of someone I love so much?” He gently caressed Spike’s cheek. “I can’t believe you met the sun.”
“Couldn’t let you end up alone, now could I? You might replace me with some cute dead guy,” Xander chuckled.
“They don’t get deader or cuter than you.”
“Are you ready to get checked in?” Spike asked. “Once you answer the intake questions, Pete lets you in and you get your room assignment.”
“Have you done it yet?” Xander asked. Spike shook his head.
“I was waiting for you, Pet. It’s Heaven. Who needs to be in paradise, lacking the one they love?” he asked.
“I love you.” Xander whispered. “Can I keep you?” Spike bit down on his lip, remembering the first time Xander had ever whispered that to him. For many years, it had been their mantra.
