Will sighed as he turned the familiar box over in his hand. He
remembered it well. It had been one of his earlier jobs. The pay
was bad and Angel was worse. It was also the one that started
their very brief relationship.

Like a lot of actors just starting out, Will had confused reality and play
acting. He had fallen into the trap of becoming involved with your costar
and believing that the feelings and actions that took place on screen
could be translated to off.

It took only weeks for him to understand and rectify.

It was like the cop that went home and policed his own family, or
the chef who insisted on belittling his wife's cooking. A job is just that.
It is a way to make a living. Will now clearly understood that an
occupation was not real life.

It was taking Angel a lot longer to comprehend. And that is where
Will's strong suspicion of where this came from originated.

Will crossed his arms, leaned back against the desk of the next
cubical and chuckled.
"Ah, yes, I see you have discovered my little secret. Well, I did tell
you I was an actor."

Will's casual, cavalier attitude stunned and crushed Xander, causing him
to spin around and face a man he now realized was really little more
than a total stranger.

"That's it? You lie to me. You jeopardize my job by interacting with
my students. You pretend that what we did was something special when
the truth is, you will fuck anyone for money. How could you? How
can you do this? How can you let these people touch you and fuck you?
And who is this Angel? What are you two to each other?"

Xander's eyes were on the box in Will's hand. His breathing was
ragged and his heart pounded painfully in an attempt to not shatter.
If he had looked up, he would have seen the matching agony on
Will's face before he drew on all the acting skills he knew to mask it.

"Fuck for money? I am NOT a prostitute. I am an actor. I told
you that. I make independent films. That part was also true.
And Angel? What about him? He is someone I work with. He
is an actor that I make movies with. Period. Nothing more.
So what am I guilty of? Not spilling every single little bean? What
great sin have I committed?"

"The sin of omission, Spike"
"Sin of o...., why you sanctimonious little prick. Who the fuck are you?
You think you are so much better than me? Are you open and honest
about every single detail of YOUR life? Do the parents that trust their
most prized possessions with you know you are gay? Have you stood
up at the PTA meeting and confessed your deviant lifestyle?"

Will waved his arms as though addressing a large audience.
"Yes, Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Public, that's correct. I teach your kiddies
the alphabet during the day and I engage in anal, homosexual behavior
at night. Up the arse? Yes, as a matter of fact I do."

Xander rose to his feet and took a step back as though he had been
slapped.
"Are you threatening me? You want to tell my student's parents
and ruin me? Do you hate me that much? You say Angel is nothing to
you, but that's not how he sounded on the phone."

Will was confused.
"You talked to Angel on the phone? When? Why?"
Then something else Xander had said rattled his brain.

"You think that I am so disgusting? Like a disease? You're afraid that my
mere presence around your delicate charges could contaminate them?
Or is it that you think I would intentionally say or do someting to cause
you to lose your job?"

"Would you? Is that what you want?"

Will was stunned that Xander would even think that.
"What? No. Xan, I didn't mean.....wait, please."

Will rubbed his hands over his face as he felt it all slip away.
Like trying to catch the rain in his hands, his fingers grasp at
something ungrippable.

He couldn't let it end like this. He had to try again to make it right.

His voice was low, sincere and pleading.
"Xander. The last few days with you have been the best of my
life. I'm crazy about you. I'm sorry I didn't tell you about this,
I should have trusted you to understand, but, please, is it all that
important? It's just a job. I want other things in life too. This is
just the ticket to get there."

For a moment, Xander waivered.
He knew that his time with Will had been the best of his life too.
He thought he had found the man he was destined to be with,
but now knew he was wrong. The cost of happiness was too high.

"It does matter. You have dreams, well, this is my dream."
Xander waved his arms in all directions.

"Being a teacher. Leading my kids in their first steps into education
and life, that is my dream and I can't give it up. Not for love. Not
for anything. If I can't tell them that I'm gay I sure as hell can't tell
them I'm involved with a gay porn star. I'm sorry, Will, but...."

"Love?"
"What?"
"You said 'not for love'."

Xander sadly shook his head.
"There isn't anything more to say, Will. You need to go now."
"You're an idiot, Xander Harris. Someday you will regret throwing
us away."

Xander nodded. He already regretted it.

Will raised his head and straightened his shoulders. He refused to
crawl or beg any more. If that was what Xander foolishly wanted,
so be it.
He dropped the movie in a nearby trash can and turned away.
At the last second, Xander called after him.

"Will."

Hope filled Will's heart and he looked back.
"Yeah?"
"Not that it matters now, but is that it? Are there any other secrets
that you hid from me?"

Will thought briefly about his son, about Scotty, before deciding
that, fuck it, he didn't owe this man anything.
"No"

And he walked away.

Oh yeah, big with the angst.

You are not going to leave them like that, right?

Well, this is 24 our of 35 chapters. It won't be left like that;we have another 1/3rd of the fic to get through.

Poor Xan and Will. :(
26th-Sep-2008 10:03 am (UTC)
They each need to go on with their own lives and the other people and obligations they have. During that time maybe they can rethink their stupidity. Maybe it just won't work. It remains to be seen.
26th-Sep-2008 09:28 am (UTC)
*sniffles* Mys soooooo needs those brownies she made last night after this! *wipes tears* Stupid MEN!!!!!!! Hiding their feelings, hiding their lives, hiding their... ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*shove brownie in mouth and whimpers*
26th-Sep-2008 10:01 am (UTC)
*wrestles the Mys to the floor and recovers the brownie*
Yum.

Yes, men can be...well, men. Was that to insulting a word to
use? Anyway, can they recover from this? If they do get
back together will that one more lie be the straw that breaks
Xander's back?
Dum da dum dum.
26th-Sep-2008 09:53 am (UTC)
*waterfall of tears*

make it better, waaaaaaaaah?
26th-Sep-2008 09:56 am (UTC)
*hands you a tissue*
Sadly, the road to true love is often rough and rocky,
but I will see what I can do.
26th-Sep-2008 12:41 pm (UTC)
And that was just as ugly as expected.

And you only have 11 chapters left to make it right!! If you are going to make it right, that is... *archs inquisitive eyebrow*
26th-Sep-2008 01:04 pm (UTC)
Will it be made right?
I must confess, I believe life is hard enough and I don't like to read stories that have tragic, painful endings. That's why I usually go for romantic, cheesy, soppy endings.
Of course there is always a first time.
26th-Sep-2008 12:49 pm (UTC)
*whimpering sigh* so much drama! stupid stupid boys. And stupid stupid Angel, not that he caused the problems, he was just the catalyst that made then come to light...okay, yeah he caused it. it feels good to blame others, lol
26th-Sep-2008 01:05 pm (UTC)
Blaming others is always a good idea. It takes the heat off our own stupidity. I can work with that. These two will have to some serious self examination before they can look at each other differently.
26th-Sep-2008 04:52 pm (UTC)
Spike doesn't get it. If Xander's secret comes out he will lose everything where as Will will be able to continue with his life. It was a mistake that he didn't say anything about Scotty. This will come back to bite him. Xander has a right to be upset. Will has to many secrets. I hope he gets his act together. And yes he did threaten him.
26th-Sep-2008 05:00 pm (UTC)
It might not have been intended as a threat, but it certainly came out as one. Xander is angry as Will for being a hypocrite but when he takes an honest look at himself, he might see the same thing. Once Xander gets his own ducks in a row, then he will be ready to face Will.
26th-Sep-2008 05:21 pm (UTC)
Well, that was nice and angsty. Poor boys. SO full of hurt and yet so wrong about each other.
26th-Sep-2008 05:29 pm (UTC)
Tomorrow, Xander will get a deeper understanding of Will's job.
*snicker*
26th-Sep-2008 10:19 pm (UTC)
Can I pick these two men up and shake them until their brains reset themselves into...hey, I really, really, like this guy. To h*ll with what he does for a living, I want him in my life! Please? They need a good shakeup.

Poor boys. Both were so happy, and now it's all gone. Darn it, Bee, you've got to make it right. Pretty please? With chocolate? Lots and lots of the best chocolate in the world? Hmmmm?

Umm...that DVD, Bee. Are you going to leave it in the trash? Because I'm wondering if someone could find it, and trace it back to Xander. Which would be of the very bad.

If Angel thinks this is going to get Spike back, I'm sure he's going to be in a world of hurt. Hopefully there will be a confrontation and Angel will get told, straight out, that Spike wants nothing to do with him.

How's the clean up going? Is everything almost back to normal? Hope so. How's Punkin' coping with everything?

Cathy
26th-Sep-2008 10:54 pm (UTC)
Funny you should ask about the DVD because that is what tomorrow's chapter is all about and Xander takes a closer look at Will's chosen profession.
They are foolish to throw away their happiness. I will do my best to get them together but they can be stubborn.

We are all back to normal and Punkin' is chugging away.
He is off work tomorrow and promised to take me out. Well see.
26th-Sep-2008 11:55 pm (UTC)
That was as bad as I thought it would be. Poor Will and Xander, both hurt and so stubborn. They are supposed to be together, when will they realize how much they need each other. Communication good, sulking bad and I hope Will gives Angel a smackdown. And although I can understand why Will didn't tell Xander about Scotty, that is not going to go over well when Xander finds out. I can only hope that he will be understanding by that time. Please bring our boys back together (but only after Will slugs Angel).
27th-Sep-2008 12:25 am (UTC)
Before they can get together they need to be a little more understanding of each other's life. Tomorrow's chapter give Xander a chance to think about what Will does and may see thing from a different point of view.
Still they both have other things on their plate. Will has Scotty and Willow and Xander has the school play.
27th-Sep-2008 01:09 am (UTC)
awww poor poor will, I am so sad for him and Xander as well, can I kill Angel grrr
but even if it was a bit sad it did cheer me up, as i spent all day at the hospital with my Grandmother (she had hip replacement surgury today cuz she broke it yesterday)
Spandery goodness is good for the soul
27th-Sep-2008 10:12 am (UTC)
Aww, poor Grandma. On an up note, mine had one of those and she did very well. I will keep a good thought for yours.

Xander needs to rethink his stubborn position on both Will and
on coming out himself. He might be surprised.
27th-Sep-2008 05:15 am (UTC)
Hmmm.
Well, Xander made some pretty nasty accusations there.
Can't say I think Will's response was out of line...
Possibly, he should have let Xander know what he did for a living - maybe not. Does he *really* owe a man he's had one date with the story of his life.
OTOH, yelling at Xander about his gayness in the school library where anyone could hear him probably wasn't a good idea.
I say: "Kill Angel. It's all his fault!"
27th-Sep-2008 10:04 am (UTC)
Hmm. We could kill Angel, yeah, I'm good with that,
but really that is just hating the messenger instead of the message.
No, for them to get together, they need to talk it out and decide on some personal priorities.
27th-Sep-2008 05:30 am (UTC)
*slaps head* duh! X_X
27th-Sep-2008 09:58 am (UTC)
You should also slap both their heads while you are at it.
27th-Sep-2008 05:54 am (UTC)
Happy sigh (ok I'm officially sick). But they cant make it better if it doesn't get a little broken first. I wonder if their going to end up clashing at the party (the party is still yet to come correct?) Thanks so much for sharing!!~Bee
27th-Sep-2008 09:57 am (UTC)
They both still have their lives to live and obligations to deal with.
Xander is the one who cannot accept Will's job and it will be up to Xander to come to terms with it. The next chapter is the first step.
28th-Sep-2008 06:51 am (UTC)
I really hope the big giant turd with the spiky bad hair and the stupid "real" hollywood actor sunglasses hits the fan soon. After Spike throws him into it. And maybe a few others.
28th-Sep-2008 09:03 am (UTC)
Angel was an ass for doing what he did but if Will had been honest,
Angel wouldn't have had any amunition. Now our two are going to have to work around this and decide what they want.
