Summary: Alexander Harris is a highly successful author of romantic novels under the pen name Xander Harris. His stories have a twist, his hero is a 500 year old, ensouled vampire called Angel and the love interest is always male. Shy and retiring he lives a quiet, orderly life in the town of Sunnydale where he was born and raised. In contrast his younger step brother Lindsey McDonald lives an exciting life traveling the world and lurching from crisis to crisis. When Lindsey lands in a spot of bother Xander's money can't solve, it's up to Xander to launch a rescue mission. Along the way he meets the handsome, roguish, soldier of fortune William Stone. Question is, is it the best or worst thing to ever happen to him?
It was Spike who related their story to Finn as they ate. He carefully omitted any mention of treasure maps, Finn didn't ask questions. Xander was busy hoovering up his second helping of meat and salad, he hadn't noticed how desperately famished he was. A pile of his novels and a pen lay on the table beside him. Finn's face darkened as Spike described the man he thought was after them. "Sounds like Liam O'Connor. He's Head Honcho in this province. Calls himself The Minister of Antiquities or Chief of Police. Uses the Secret Police as his personal army. What he is, is an antiques thief and butcher. We've crossed paths once or twice"
Xander pushed his empty plate away. "That beef hit the spot." He picked up the pen and began to sign each of the books. Spike and Finn glanced at each other but said nothing. Spike reached across and picked up one of the hardbacks. He looked at the front. 'Dark Stranger'. He turned it over and read the blurb, his eyebrow arched and he looked speculatively at Xander.
"Riley, have you a phone I could use?" Xander asked without looking up. "I'm sorry there's no use for a phone here. My men use short wave radios." Xander nodded. "Makes sense." Spike added replacing the book. "One of your men said you have a car?"
"Car?" Finn frowned and then grinned broadly. "He must mean my Little Mule." Spike and Xander looked at each other.
Oz was asleep under a blanket on the backseat of the Lada when the police jeeps returned to the compound. He looked cautiously out of the window and watched O'Connor walk into the Police Station. He saw the black jeeps and the uniformed men. "Fuck the goon squad. Time to leave." He scrambled behind the wheel. There was a town many miles to the North, the only one he knew of with a bus station and a telephone. If Harris had any sense and he doubted he had, he'd make for there, perhaps he'd get lucky and pick him up on the way. He started the car and drove out of the compound.
Finn led the way to the garage. Spike and Xander followed. Spike leaned across and whispered in Xander's ear. "That beef, it was Llama."
"What! One of those cute camely things with the hair?" Xander whispered hoarsely. Spike nodded and grinned wickedly as Xander paled.
The 4X4 truck was huge, sleek and blood red all shiny chrome and lights. 'Little Mule' was emblazoned in white lettering on each of the cab doors. Finn grinned. "My Little Mule. Gun proof, fire proof and damn near bomb proof. There's a town about half a day's drive. It has a telephone and a bus station, even a hotel. I'd take you to Cartagena myself but I'm a wanted man there, you know how it is. " Spike nodded. "The town will be fine."
There was the sound of running feet. A young boy appeared. "Señor Finn O'Connor está viniendo!"
"O'Connor! Get in the cab!" Riley urged climbing behind the wheel. Spike pushed Xander in first and climbed in himself. There were only two seat belts, one for Finn and one for Spike; but as Spike put his arm tightly around Xander's waist and braced his feet, telling him to hang on, Xander didn't mind. Spike and Finn nodded to each other and grinned. The engine roared to life and the truck catapulted out of the garage and through the rear doors of the compound.
At the front the black jeeps swung left and right and followed the wall to the rear. Spike twisted round. "They're coming."
Little Mule bounced, lurched and tore up the road. The jeeps following dropped into single file. Bullets ricocheted off the rear window and metal of the cab. Xander ducked and clung to Spike . "Let's see if we can lose them." Finn grinned and pushed the accelerator to the floor, sharply turning right into a field of tall grass. Little Mule lurched forward and tore through the long grass. The gunfire stopped though they could still hear the noise of jeeps following. They drove at breakneck speed for several minutes. The noise of the pursuit grew fainter. Spike kept twisting round.
Suddenly Finn turned sharply left and they burst through the long grass onto a flat, wide plain. Spike glared. "Bloody hell! What are you doing? That field was cover!"
"Trust me, you'll like this much better." Finn chuckled.
The jeeps emerged from the grass and spread out. There was a hail of gunfire. "Christ Finn you're madder than I am. Do you even know where you're going?" Spike grinned.
"River." Finn replied.
Spike looked and paled. "You mean THAT river? The one with no bridge?" Xander's head popped up. "What do you mean, no bridge?" Spike gestured wildly in front of them. "I mean that river, the one with no bridge!" Xander looked. It was a torrent wide and deep, he buried his face in Spike's chest and prayed.
Finn sped towards the river. He reached forward and pressed a button on the dashboard. A steel ramp appeared from the ground and moved into position. Spike screwed his eyes shut.
Little Mule hit the ramp and lifted into the air soaring over the river. Finn whooped loudly. The front wheels hit the earth on the other side with a sickening jolt, the truck bounced and the back wheels crashed down. The front wheels reared into the air and crashed down again. Xander clung to Spike for dear life.
The engine hiccupped, momentum stuttered then lurched forward and raced away. Finn pressed the button and behind them the ramp disappeared into the earth. The jeeps screeched to a halt, stranded on the other side of the river. O'Connor got out and glared at the disappearing truck.
"That river is a raging torrent up and downstream. There's rapids and waterfalls." Finn explained.
"But won't they just find a bridge?" Xander questioned.
"There isn't one, not since my men blew it up. The nearest crossing point is two days drive in either direction. If he doesn't give up you'll be gone and in Catagena long before he can reach you."
They drove into the early afternoon. Xander's gurgling stomach and cramps got to be more than he could bear. Finn skidded to a halt on a hill top overlooking the town. Xander had to shit and he had to do it now. He scrambled over a chuckling Spike and headed for the nearest cover. Finn and Spike climbed out. Finn popped the hood and checked the radiator. Spike looked round, Finn raised his head. "He's falling in love with you. You can see it in the way he looks at you." Spike raised an eyebrow. "Maybe." Finn closed the hood. "Let him keep some dignity." Spike nodded.
Xander emerged and began to walk towards them. Spike watched him then his eyes drifted left. It was all he could do not to whoop with joy. There it was. 'El Tenedor del Diablo' the dead tree shaped like a three pronged fork. 'The Devil's Pitchfork' from the map. The Heart couldn't be far away! "Come on Xander." Spike prompted.
Xander trotted to the truck. He glared at Spike as he climbed in. "I cannot believe you let me eat Llama!" Spike chuckled as he slid in next to him.
"What can I say? I'm evil."
