Summary: Alexander Harris is a highly successful author of romantic novels under the pen name Xander Harris. His stories have a twist, his hero is a 500 year old, ensouled vampire called Angel and the love interest is always male. Shy and retiring he lives a quiet, orderly life in the town of Sunnydale where he was born and raised. In contrast his younger step brother Lindsey McDonald lives an exciting life traveling the world and lurching from crisis to crisis. When Lindsey lands in a spot of bother Xander's money can't solve, it's up to Xander to launch a rescue mission. Along the way he meets the handsome, roguish, soldier of fortune William Stone. Question is, is it the best or worst thing to ever happen to him?
In under half an hour they were stepping into the street teeming with people. It was early evening and the lanterns had been lit. Children ran with sparklers, there were roundabouts and simple rides, laughter and music filled the air. Tables decorated with flowers and candles filled the sidewalk and a dance floor had been laid out. Spike led Xander to a table close to by.
Xander kept stealing glances at Spike. He was dressed entirely in black. A simple, black, fitted, silk shirt and tight, black jeans that left little to the imagination. Xander wondered how he breathed. He had shaved and combed back his hair and his unbuttoned shirt gave Xander tantalizing glimpses of his muscled chest.
Spike ordered them a meal and a bottle of wine though he intended to drink little, if the night went as planned, he wanted a clear head. Xander had taken some persuading to leave his bag locked in the room but Spike convinced him it was safer than bringing it onto the crowded street, where it could be snatched or rifled. They relaxed into easy conversation and laughter, Spike told outrageous stories and Xander talked about his books. Spike found himself surprisingly interested and time passed quickly.
Near the end of their meal a large woman sat at the table next to them. She placed her canvas bag on the floor where it fell unnoticed against the leg of Xander's chair. Oz was scanning the crowd for his quarry. He'd tried to get a room at the hotel without luck, so he'd parked the Lada at the rear of the building. Finally he spied what he was looking for, they were seated at a table, oblivious to his presence. His eyes traveled down to the canvas bag resting against Xander's chair, his heart leapt. Using the tables as cover Oz began to crawl towards the bag intent on snatching the map.
Spike smiled at Xander. "Come on, dance with me." Xander shook his head. "Don't know how." Spike wasn't going to take no for an answer. He stood up. "Follow my lead, you'll soon pick it up."
"We can't, two men." He protested. Spike sighed and rolled his eyes. "Take a good look, they're relaxed here." Xander looked. There were several male couples and more female. He took Spike's outstretched hand and let him lead him to the dance floor.
Oz reached the table next to Xander's and put out a hand for the bag. The woman looked down and screamed. She hauled Oz bodily from under the table and dangled him in the air shaking him like a rag doll and screeching at him in Spanish. He scrabbled at her wildly, legs kicking.
"Calm down lady! I dropped my fork!" He choked, his face turning red.
She began to slap him repeatedly.
She was clearly unhinged.
He feared for his life.
A waiter rushed over and began to remonstrate with the woman and get her hands from around Oz's neck.
She punched the waiter.
Oz's face turned purple.
A policeman arrived.
Oz began to feel light headed.
The policeman and the woman yelled at each other. She punched him.
Her grip slipped and Oz wriggled free. Oz gulped in air and scrambled away.
He ran for his life.
Xander and Spike watched the farce play out near their table with some amusement. When it finished, Spike placed Xander's left hand on his right shoulder and took his right in his left. He placed his right hand on Xander's left hip and began to move and sway in time to the music. Xander looked down at his feet. "Look at me." Spike ordered. Xander looked up. Spike was smiling at him. "Concentrate on me, follow my movements and don't look down." Xander didn't need telling twice.
At first Xander's movements were stiff and awkward. Spike pushed at his hip and guided him with his hand, the rhythm of the music began to take over and he relaxed. Soon his hips were swaying to the music and Spike guided them round the dance floor. Both men laughed.
The tempo changed. Spike stepped back and placed Xander's hands flat against his. Their hips rocked and swayed. Spike broke free and danced around Xander, hips swaying and arms moving in time to the music. He was like a circling Shark. Xander thought it was the sexiest thing he'd ever seen. Spike swooped in and spun Xander round and he gasped.
He couldn't remember having such a good time.
They danced on into the night. Stars twinkled above them and the dance floor became crowded. The children melted away and the night took on a different tone. The music slowed and Xander made as if to leave, Spike yanked him back. He put Xander's arms around his neck, circling his arms round the brunette's waist, he pulled their bodies flush against each other and they swayed gently in place. Xander relaxed and let his head fall on Spike's shoulder, Spike nuzzled gently at his neck.
This night would be the last time they'd be together and Spike wanted to make it special, something Xander and he would look back on as a beautiful, fond memory.
Then perhaps Xander wouldn't think too badly of him.
