Summary: Alexander Harris is a highly successful author of romantic novels under the pen name Xander Harris. His stories have a twist, his hero is a 500 year old, ensouled vampire called Angel and the love interest is always male. Shy and retiring he lives a quiet, orderly life in the town of Sunnydale where he was born and raised. In contrast his younger step brother Lindsey McDonald lives an exciting life traveling the world and lurching from crisis to crisis. When Lindsey lands in a spot of bother Xander's money can't solve, it's up to Xander to launch a rescue mission. Along the way he meets the handsome, roguish, soldier of fortune William Stone. Question is, is it the best or worst thing to ever happen to him?
Spike waited for the Lada to fill with water, Xander took a deep breath and steered for all he was worth. The car bobbed along in the center of the swirling river and it took Spike a few seconds to realize that not even his feet were wet, by which time Xander was turning blue. "Breathe Pet, car floats," Spike instructed. Xander gasped and started the breathe, he tried to turn on the windscreen wipers as the car gathered speed.
Spike stared at him incredulously. "Xander what do you think you're
trying to do?" Xander looked at him and blinked in confusion. He changed gear.
The river began to roar.
Spike blinked, had it all finally become too much for the brunette? Had he at last lost the plot altogether? "Xander it's a fucking car not a boat. What do you think you're doing?" He snapped.
Xander gestured and looked at Spike as if the blond was being totally unreasonable. "I'm trying to steer away from those rapids in front of us."
Suddenly Spike was aware of the roar and speed of the river as it began to crash through rocks and cascade over the waterfall ahead of them. Spike yelled. "Fucking Hell! Waterfall!" Xander's eyes widened. "Waterfall! What do we do now?"
"Jump?" Xander echoed.
"Jump!" Spike shouted over the thunderous roar of the water. Spike grabbed hold of Xander's wrist. He waited until the Lada tipped over the falls and with both feet kicked out the door and jumped dragging Xander with him. The car plummeted down and smashed into the water and rocks below and disappeared from sight.
Spike and Xander fell, they hit the water feet first and sunk under. Spike lost his grip on Xander's wrist and struck out for the surface. He bobbed up and looked wildly around, but there was no sign of him. The tumultuous river carried him along and Spike struggled to reach the side.
Xander felt spike's hand slip from his wrist and for a moment he panicked and then struck out for the surface, there was no sign of Spike. The fast flowing river carried him along and he struggled to reach the nearest bank.
Spike dragged himself out onto the rocks. He rested for a second, gasping for breath. Then turned back to face the water, his eyes widened as he saw Xander drag himself out onto the grassy bank on the other side of the river. Xander slumped onto the grass. He rested a few seconds and then he imagined he heard someone shouting his name. He sat up. Spike was standing on the rocks on the other side of the river waving both arms in the air and shouting his name. His joy at seeing the blond was short lived as he realized Spike was on the opposite side . He looked up and down the river, there was no way of getting over. He struggled to his feet. "What the fuckl Spike! You're on the wrong side." He yelled.
"Bloody Hell pet, I thought you'd drowned!" Spike shouted above the roar of the river, he looked at the deep, churning water. "There's no way I can cross this sucker!" He shrugged. Oz's words echoed in Xander's head. "You did this on purpose!" He accused. "What! We just went over a fucking waterfall!" Spike made a helpless gesture. "And you just happen to end up on the opposite side of the river, with the treasure!" He paused as tears stung his eyes. "You planned this."
Spike seethed. "Why you ungrateful....!"
"He was right, you conned me!" Xander sniffed.
Spike put his hands on his hips. "What was the name of the Hotel in Cartagena?"
"Hotel Catragena, what do you care?"
"Follow the road West, it's not far, you'll be there in a couple of hours and I'll meet you there." Spike promised.
"Oh sure," Xander sneered. "with the treasure in your pocket. What about Lindsey? You said you'd give it up!"
"Look Pet there's no need for them to know about this." Spike spread his arms in a 'be reasonable, gesture.' "You have the map."
"And you have the treasure." Xander snapped.
"But they don't know that! They just want the map, give it to them and they'll release your brother." Spike reasoned.
"But Spike..!" Xander protested.
"Trust me!" Spike implored.
Suddenly they could hear the noise of jeeps. "Go!" Spike yelled and began to scramble away over the rocks. Xander turned and made his way quickly up the bank. He saw the road and began to follow it West.
His clothes were dry by the time he walked into Cartagena. It was a bustling, walled City where ancient and modern met in a bewildering mix. High skyscrapers rubbed shoulders with old, white buildings and modern roads gave way to dusty streets. He asked directions and was soon walking into the cool interior of the hotel. He attracted odd looks as he checked in, a few awkward questions about luggage and length of stay were settled by his passport and credit card. He asked to be informed immediately if a William or Spike Stone checked in, asked for him or left a message, he still had hope.
Once in his room he phoned Warren, first he asked to speak to Lindsey and assure himself he was unharmed. Warren let them exchange a few words and then took the phone back.
"Ok Harris listen up. You have the map?" Warren asked.
"Good. Walk to your window and look out," Warren instructed.
Xander looked out across the Bay.
"See the island to North where the river runs into the bay. The one with the old fort, with the tower?"
"Yes," Xander replied.
"You're going to meet me there, a water taxi leaves from the back of your hotel every fifteen minutes, catch the 19.00 and ask to be dropped at the island." Warren paused. "It's a tourist attraction, but it will be quiet by then. Make sure you're alone, leave that guy you've got in tow at the hotel."
Xander drew a deep breath. "He's not with me."
"Good. You bring the map, I'll bring the brother and we'll make the exchange. Oh and Harris, don't get fucking lost!"
The line went dead.
