Chapter 18/20
Rating: NC17

Xander glanced at his watch which amazingly still worked. 'Only goes to show you get what you pay for.' He immediately thought of Spike. He phoned reception, there was no news, his head told him Spike and the treasure were long gone, his heart told him to hope. It was 2.40pm, he had to do something or he'd go mad. He went down to the lobby and told the clerk if Spike showed up to send him up to the room to wait and he'd be back shortly.

He found a drugstore and bought toiletries and a clothes shop and bought a new outfit. Back at the hotel he remembered Warren had said the island was a tourist attraction and he picked up a leaflet of information and a plan of the fort. It wouldn't hurt to know where he was going and studying it would take his mind off Spike.

There was no word from Spike and the possibility Spike was dead began to surface.

He showered, shaved and combed his hair, he stood in the room staring at the clothes he'd bought, he honestly couldn't remember buying them or why. They were nothing like his usual clothes except the crisp, white boxers and charcoal socks, the blue jeans, white T shirt and leather jacket were more Spike than him. He shrugged and put them on, he missed Spike.

He knew he should eat something but his stomach was tied in knots, so he drank some bottled water and lay on the bed studying the information and the layout of the fort. Every twenty minutes he phoned reception for any news of Spike. At last an exasperated receptionist told him he would phone him the very instant he had any news and swore it on his beloved Mother's life. Reluctantly Xander took the hint.

By 6.30pm he began to give up hope. There was a very real possibility Spike was dead, he prayed not. In his heart he hoped he'd just gone, headed out with the treasure, that he bought his yacht and lived his dream. Xander smiled at the thought, he couldn't find it in his heart to be bitter. Either way he had to keep it together, there'd be time later for mourning and tears. He checked in his bag that the map was safe and it was, tucked snug and dry in it's plastic cover. He prayed to whatever deities looked after foolish young men, that they didn't know Spike had already taken the treasure and made his way to the water taxi.

A chill wind blew across the Bay and Xander shivered, pulling the leather jacket closer around him. He was the only passenger and it was already quite dark. The journey took almost twenty minutes, at the dock he driver had trouble maneuvering the water taxi because of an ancient motor launch already berthed there. Xander got off and several people got on. The driver warned him the last water taxi back to the hotel was at 10.00pm Xander nodded.

He looked around noticing how out of place an old trawler looked anchored in the bay amongst the local fishing boats. He walked up a flight of stone steps, a low parapet wall surrounded the fort. The only light came from bare bulbs strung on wire suspended from tall posts. Xander walked through the arched, entrance and looked around.

He was stood in an old, stone courtyard, tunnels stretched away in all directions and he appeared to be alone. Where was he supposed to go? He walked into the nearest tunnel, another stretched away to the left and at the end of it a fire blazed in an old oil drum. He walked towards it, he reached the drum and stopped.

"Over here!" Xander jumped as the sound bounced off the tunnel walls. Heart thumping, he walked towards the voice, an old, oil lantern had been placed on the ground.

"Stop right there! You brought the map?" A voice barked.

"Yes."

"Take it out, throw it on the ground and step back five paces."

"Let me see Lindsey first!"

Lindsey was pushed, stumbling forward out of the shadows, his hands tied in front of him. He grinned broadly. "Hi Xanny!"

"Linds!" Xander stepped forward.

"Stop!, The map!" The voice snapped. Xander stepped back and taking out the map threw it on the ground. Warren stepped out of the shadows behind Lindsey. He was younger than Xander expected and flanked by two armed men, he was carrying a flash light. He walked forward. "If the map is genuine, if you haven't pulled a fast one, you and your brother are free to go." He picked up the map. Shone the flash light on it and studied it for almost a minute. He looked up and grinned. "Mr Harris, you and your asshole brother are free to go."

Xander breathed.

Warren laughed and moved away. Xander and Lindsey ran towards each other and Xander hugged his smaller brother. "Xan the rope." Lindsey urged. "Untie me." Xander untied the rope and slung his arm around Lindsey's shoulders. "Let's go home."

They began to walk back along the tunnel, suddenly bullets sprayed the ground in front of them and the men leapt back. Spike stepped out of the shadows. "I told you I'd be here," he smiled. "I missed you at the hotel, you'd already left."

"Spike!" Xander gasped his arm slipping from Lindsey's shoulder.

"Lindsey frowned. "You know this guy?"

"It's a long story, we met in the jungle." Xander explained. "Way to go bro." Lindsey grinned broadly and adjusted his Stetson, his eyes traveling up Spike's body. "Aren't you going to introduce us?"

Xander scowled at his brother.

Lindsey looked from Xander to Spike and back again. He took in Xander's scowl. The penny dropped. "Oh my God! You an' him?" He slapped Xander's back. "About fucking time!"
