Summary: Alexander Harris is a highly successful author of romantic novels under the pen name Xander Harris. His stories have a twist, his hero is a 500 year old, ensouled vampire called Angel and the love interest is always male. Shy and retiring he lives a quiet, orderly life in the town of Sunnydale where he was born and raised. In contrast his younger step brother Lindsey McDonald lives an exciting life traveling the world and lurching from crisis to crisis. When Lindsey lands in a spot of bother Xander's money can't solve, it's up to Xander to launch a rescue mission. Along the way he meets the handsome, roguish, soldier of fortune William Stone. Question is, is it the best or worst thing to ever happen to him?
This is the last chapter, it may not end exactly as you would wish. I can only advise you to have faith in the author!
O'Connor continued to scream.
Spike saw his chance, grabbed the rifle from the guard and knocked him out. "Down!" He shouted and began firing.
Oz and Warren ran.
Lindsey flung himself on the ground muttering. "What a man!" Xander knelt beside O'Connor and he tore off his belt, made a loop and cinched it tight above the bleeding stump. "That'll stop the bleeding." O'Connor looked at him and snarled, Xander blinked, some people were plain ungrateful. He grabbed O'Connor's fallen knife and as O'Connor scrabbled for him, he grasped Lindsey's arm and ran. Spike continued to fire wildly and the shooting disturbed the crocodiles who abandoned their pool and slithered away, Spike spied the one who'd eaten his gem and fired at it but missed.
Returning gunfire pinned him down.
Xander and Lindsey made it into the tunnels, O'Connor picked up a fallen gun and staggered after them. Spike fired a quick volley and ran after the crocodile. Warren and Oz fell to their knees and crawled quickly away, their men appeared on a wall firing their rifles. "Bring the launch round muchachos, keep the fuckers pinned down till I reach the boat!" Warren shouted.
In the tunnels Xander stopped and tried to recall the layout, Lindsey straightened his Stetson. "That's quite a man you've got there, I've gotta tell you bro. you ever want to trade I'm in, I'm your man." Xander gave him a murderous glare. "What? Only joking!" Lindsey shrugged.
Xander saw O'Connor stagger into view. "Come on, this way!" They ran.
The gunfire drove the crocodile deeper into the fort, ducking and diving Spike ran after it.
Warren and Oz saw the dock ahead. "Run boys!" Warren shouted. Warren and his men ran, Oz ran as fast as he could bringing up the rear but dropping further and further behind. Xander and Lindsey climbed the steep steps. "Xan do you even know where we're goin'?" Lindsey asked. "Up to the next level," Xander replied. "Uh?" Lindsey frowned. "I figure, even with the tourniquet O'Connor's lost too much blood and is in too much pain to climb up." Xander panted. Clearly Xander didn't know O'Connor. "I admire your faith!" Lindsey snapped.
Warren and his men reached the launch and leapt on board, Oz gasping for breath ran after them. "Wait! Wait for me! Come back Warren, come back!" He yelled. The launch roared away from the dock towards the trawler in the Bay. Oz skidded to a halt.
"Jump Oz, swim!" Warren shouted. "I can't swim Warren, you know that!"
"I'll send the launch back for you."
"Soon Oz, soon."
"How soon is soon?"
"Very soon." Warren began to climb up the ladder onto the trawler.
Spike searched for the crocodile, it was scared, all it wanted to do was make for the safety of the water it smelt on the other side of the wall. Spike rounded the corner and saw it climb up and begin to slither over the wall, he had no time to shoot. He flung his rifle away and sprinted towards it, as it's tail began to slip over the wall he threw himself and wrapped both arms around the tail and heaved back with all his strength. "Where the fuck do you think you're going mate?"
Xander and Lindsey reached the second level. "Be careful of the crocodile pit, it has a wooden grille over the top, mind you don't catch your foot." Xander warned. Xander ran to the wall, he could see Spike below and Lindsey joined him. "Hey there's Spike. What's he doing?" Xander frowned. "I think he's wrestling a crocodile." Lindsey's voice was full of admiration. "Do you think he has a Gay brother?"
On the dock Oz watched in horror as the trawler weighed anchor. "You fucker Warren! Come back, you're my cousin! Your Mother, my Mother!" Warren waved from the deck of the trawler. "Find a place to hide Oz, I'll come back for you when things quiet down!"
"A year or two!"
There was a loud siren and a gunboat headed across the Bay. Oz grinned and jumped up and down waving his arms. "There! There! The trawler! Get him it's full of stolen antiques!" He watched with a maniacal gleam in his eye as the boat pursued the trawler. The water taxi drifted up to the dock. Oz straightened his clothes. "Daniel Osbourne," he muttered. "this is your lucky day."
Spike braced his feet against the wall and strained to pull the reptile back, but it didn't move, it was a stalemate.
Lindsey turned round and gasped, O'Connor was right behind them. Xander spun round and pulled Lindsey behind him as O'Connor staggered. "You've lost a lot of blood, you should sit down." Xander edged them away, he looked over the wall and shouted. "Spike! Spike! Up here, Spike!" Spike looked up and groaned, he could see O'Connor with a gun pointed at Xander. He looked at the crocodile, he looked at Xander. He sighed and swore loudly, "Fuck!" he let the crocodile slide over the wall and sprinted for the steps.
O'Connor shook his head to clear it and gave a thin smile. "You'll be dead before he gets here." He hissed. Something in Xander snapped and his hand closed around the knife he still had hidden behind his back. His face hardened. "Since coming to this Godforsaken country I've been threatened, chased and shot at, I've slid down mountains, swung on ropes across ravines, driven with madmen. Sailed down rivers in cars, gone over waterfalls and nearly drowned. I nearly became a crocodile's lunch and I've eaten Llama!" By the end he was yelling.
Lindsey's eyes widened. "Sounds like you had a tough day bro."
"I. HAVE. HAD. ENOUGH!" Xander exclaimed.
O'Connor swayed and fired.
There was a sickening thud as a body hit the ground.
Lindsey had fainted.
Xander threw the knife. He really hoped years of playing darts in pseudo British style bars with Wes and Giles might have paid off, it didn't; the knife went wide, but it was enough. O'Connor already weak, instinctively dodged and the heel of his boot caught in the wooden grille, he staggered backward and toppled, crashing through. Xander lunged trying to catch him, but his fingers closed on air.
O'Connor was still strong enough to scream.
Xander looked down into the pit at the thrashing reptiles and pulled a face. "Ewwwwwwwwwwww!" He turned away. Spike came storming toward him looking around. "Where the fuck is O'Connor?" Xander nodded. "Spike looked down and grimaced. "Urgh, that is just disgusting." Spike saw Lindsey on the ground. "Is he hurt?" Xander shook his head. "He fainted when O'Connor fired at me, guess he was too weak to aim properly." He paused. "I can't believe you hid the stone there!" Spike grinned. "There's not many would rifle a strange man's crotch!"
Spike grasped Xander's upper arms. "Are you alright Pet?" Xander beamed, I am now."
Spike yanked Xander towards him and kissed him hard on the lips. "You're the best, pet." He pushed Xander away, sprinted for the wall, jumped up onto the parapet and dived into the swirling water below.
For a moment Xander stood frozen, then his fingers touched his lips. "Spike?" He raced to the wall. "Spike, Spike no!" He looked down into the water, there was no sign of Spike, tears rolled down his face and he gave a choked sob.
Behind him Lindsey raised his head and groaned. "Xan? Xander?"
Xander scrubbed away his tears with his hands and crossed to his brother. "I'm here." He sank to his knees beside him.
Lindsey looked around. "Where's Spike?"
"Gone. He left me, he's gone," Xander choked out.
