Chapter 2/23 + Epilogue

Rating:NC17 Overall

Spike was bored to screaming pitch. In the last three and a half hours he'd eaten buffet, made polite small talk with people he neither knew nor particularly liked and listened to over two hours of speeches. The high spot had been Xander's speech on the place of romance in Gay literature. It was short and funny and he'd clapped wildly.

This was Xander's world and if the odd visit there made the brunette happy, Spike would go along with it, to a point.

Now his collar and suit had united in a conspiracy to strangle him and it was time to leave before Xander began to mingle and dragging him forcibly down to the casino at ground level drew attention. Spike put his hand on Xander's forearm. "Time to leave Pet." He stood and Xander stood with him. Giles looked across and frowned, he knew this would happen. Spike loathed these events and the blond was forever cutting out early and taking Xander with him. As Xander's publisher and friend it was his duty to see to it that Xander didn't throw his career away.

He rushed to intercept them.

Spike and Xander weaved through the people politely making hasty goodbyes. "Spike! Spike." Giles appeared beside them. Spike turned half smiling. "You can't leave yet." He put a hand on Xander's arm. "Xander can't leave yet. This is an important gathering, I flew from the States to be here, he needs to socialize, talk to people."

Spike took Xander's arm and kept on walking. "He's made his speech, he's talked to people." They headed for the exit. A small crowd of men were gathered and a few middle aged and elderly ladies each grasping a copy of one of Xander's novels. Spike groaned as they blocked their path and asked Xander to sign their books.

A young man extended a limp hand to Spike. "You must be Xander's companion." He lisped. "Do you write too?" Spike bristled and the muscle danced in his cheek, Giles smirked. "Actually no, I do casino work and it's time for me to check in, " he growled. Spike brushed his way passed the crowd. "I'll be playing roulette."

Spike disappeared and Giles took Xander's arm and steered him towards the bar. "What's going on Xander? I'm worried about you."

"Giles, you always worry."

"Your book is six weeks late and that from a man who never so much as had an overdue library book is serious." He ordered two Scotches and handed one to Xander. "I can't seem to find an ending."

"It's a romance novel. They sailed off into the sunset." Giles shrugged. "Then what? What happens the next day?" Xander ask earnestly. "It's romance," Giles sighed. "there is no next day. Like your hero doesn't fart in bed or pick his nose." Xander smiled. "He does." Both men laughed. "After seven books in a row I'm beginning to feel romance fatigue."

Giles frowned. "You're getting real life and romance confused." Giles nodded. "Men like Spike don't find it easy to express how they feel,to settle down. Doesn't mean he doesn't feel it or that he doesn't want to spend his life with you." Xander shuffled "I know but it'd be nice to hear it, he's never said it, not once in nearly a year, he's never said he loves me I'm not sure where we're going any more."

"Then allow me to clarify the situation."

The man who spoke was tall, handsome, powerfully built with dark hair and eyes and tanned skin. He wore and impeccable, dark dinner suit and black and gold turban, his accent a mixture of Arabic and American. He was flanked by several black suited body guards and the man Xander recognized from the launch.

" I am Prince Omar Khalifa and I have traveled a thousand miles to meet you Xander Harris. This is Rashid my chief bodyguard and personal friend." He indicated the man Xander recognized.

Xander stared. "Are you sure it's me you want.?"

Giles rolled his eyes.

"I am sure."

"You sent me the flowers?"

"I did, though they pale by your magnificence."

Giles began polishing his glasses. "Dear Lord!"

"I've read about you in Time Magazine." Xander smiled

"Quite possibly, though I am afraid the Western press cannot understand the spirit of my people, my vision. That is why I turn to you, you are a writer, you can understand. You must write my story."

Xander shook his head. "I only write romantic novels."

Giles stepped forward, putting on his glasses. "That's correct and he's in the middle of a novel and he doesn't take private commissions, so if you'll excuse us Your Highness."

He reached for Xander's arm.

Omar drew Xander away towards the exit. His bodyguards stepped in front of Giles.

"I have your books, you're a gifted storyteller you create heroes in a world of cynics. In four nights I will be proclaimed Emperor of my people and unite the tribes of the region. Come with me, journey down the Nile, record a moment of history."

"They have Emperors in Africa?" Xander questioned.

Omar smiled. "They do now."

"Xander, Xander!" Giles looked around for Spike. "Why is he never around when he's needed," he mumbled.
