Chapter 3/23 + Epilogue
Spike stalked through the casino. It was nearly thirty minutes since he'd left Xander and there was no sign of the brunette. It was time to round up is wayward lover. He walked passed the open, double doors that led to the tabled terrace, he did a double take and stopped dead. There was Xander seated at a table and talking animatedly with some guy in a turban.
As Omar popped the champagne bottle, Spike caught the cork. "Celebrating something Pet?" Xander jumped up bubbling with excitement. "Spike! Spike this is Prince Khalifa." The two men quietly assessed one another.
"Please Xander, call me Omar."
"Omar, this is Spike Stone."
"Ahhh yes. Mr. Stone. Your companion."
That word again, Spike bristled and grit his teeth, this was proving an interesting if not entirely enjoyable night . "A word with you Pet, now!" They moved to a quiet corner. "What the Hell is going on?" Spike hissed.
"We've been invited to Africa!" Xander bounced.
Spike frowned. "Africa? I thought you wanted to go to the States?"
"I did. I do. Spike this is an amazing opportunity for me. In four nights he'll be proclaimed Emperor of his people. He'll unite all the tribes and put an end to the bloodshed that's plagued his land and carry on the work of the Great Redeemer whose gone missing." Spike shrugged. "You seem to know quite a bit about this guy," he raised an eyebrow. "so what's that to do with you?"
"He's chosen me to write his biography. It's a chance for me to write something real, something important, for my work to be taken seriously."
"Xander, you write romantic fiction." As soon as the words left his mouth Spike regretted them.
Xander scowled. "What? " His brow furrowed. "You think I can't do it?"
Spike sighed. "I didn't say that Pet, I just don't see why you have to go to Africa and why now."
"I have to be there when he's crowned, it'll be the most important part of the book. Come with me?" He urged.
Spike's eyes narrowed. "You have your heart set on doing this? On going to Africa?"
Xander hugged himself and nodded.
Spike's world began to crash around him, it was happening again he was being tossed aside and this time by Xander, for the sake of a book. He'd been a fool to think the brunette would stay, his world and Xander's couldn't exist together. His stomach tied in knots and a cold chill passed through him. "I have my heart set on Greece." He folded his arms.
Spike watched Xander struggle, conflicting emotions flickered across his face as he tried to make a decision, he decided to make it for him. "Oh what the Hell! We had a good run didn't we? Ten months, maybe it's time."
Xander's mouth dropped, he shook his head in confusion. "What? No! I'll be gone three weeks, four maximum researching the book, taking photographs, I'll meet you in Greece."
Spike nodded. "Sure you will," he muttered.
They looked at each other in silence.
Spike drew a deep breath. "When will you leave?"
"Tonight. Omar has a private jet, I'll just get some clothes and stuff from the boat."
"Private jet," Spike nodded. "of course he has."
"Spike," Xander put his hand on his chest. "I will meet you in Greece, where will you be?"
"Mykonos, Lesbos somewhere there." It didn't really matter, he'd probably never see Xander again.
"I'll find you," Xander promised.
Spike gave a half smile. " No worries." He pulled Xander to him and kissed him tenderly on the lips.
Xander was so confused, it was like they were reading the same book, but on different pages. He was only going to be gone a short while, but somehow this felt like goodbye, was the real truth that Spike wanted rid of him? Would he even be in Greece waiting?
Spike pulled back. "You stay out of trouble."
"Spike?" Xander frowned.
Spike spun away so that Xander wouldn't see his face. "I think I'll give the roulette wheel one more chance"
"Spike," He made to follow but Omar blocked his path. "take care of yourself."
Omar had watched the exchange with interest. "He's not coming?"
Xander shook his head, not trusting himself to speak.
Omar led Xander towards the waiting Rolls and ushered Xander in first. Suddenly a heavily bearded man with flowing black hair and dressed as a waiter, lunged at Omar from the crowd brandishing a Khukuri.
"Free Al- Jawhara!"
His arm traveled in an arc plunging the knife into Omar's chest.
A woman screamed.
Omar's bodyguards leapt into action, Rashid bundled Omar into the car with a startled Xander and leapt in beside the driver as the car sped away. Other guards pursued the fleeing man to the quay where he leapt into the water amid a hail of bullets.
Xander scrabbled to find where Omar was stabbed, confused he realized there was no blood.
Rashid twisted round grinning, Omar sat up and laughed. "Do not look so alarmed Xander, look." He pulled open his shirt to reveal an armored vest. "A man such as I cannot be too careful."
Spike parked the Harley, he'd stopped off and bought enough JD to keep him good and drunk until he reached Greece, then he'd change to Ouzo. He needed to get onboard the yacht, cry and drink himself into oblivion. Behind him the Rolls pulled away. Xander waved at him, he gazed sadly but didn't wave back, he watched Xander leave his life. "Oh Xander love, you were the best thing ever happened to me," he choked shaking his head.
He dismounted the bike.
Spike looked round. "Uh?"
"Psst! Over here!"
Spike looked at the old, wooden fisherman's net box, it was talking to him and he wasn't even drunk, yet. He peered. Suddenly he lid flew back and Oz popped up waving a gun.
"Bloody Hell!" Spike leapt back and then grinned. "I know you, Catagena!" He clicked his fingers. "Don't tell me...... OZ!" His face darkened. "Oz."
Oz stepped out of the box and leveled the gun at him. Spike raised his hands. "That's right asshole, Oz!"
