Chapter 13/23 + Epilogue

Rating: NC17 Overall

Oz bounced and lurched as Humphrey trotted along amongst the other camels and horses. Tarak held Humphrey's rein and Oz's hands were tied to the front of the saddle. "I promise God, let me get out of this alive and I'll reform, I'll be a good boy." He mumbled. One of the riders gave a shout and pointed ahead. Oz looked where he was pointing and squinted. A column of thick, black smoke rose from the desert, Oz beamed. "But tonight God, I'm killing Stone!" He grinned.

Omar looked through his binoculars at the column of black smoke in the far distance, he panned left and then right. At first he didn't see anything and then there, a tiny speck moving after two others, he had them now! They moved out.

Xander kept turning round to make sure Spike was still following.

"Why did you not tell Spike I was The Jewel?" Al-Jawahara frowned.

Xander shrugged. "Spike is a good man, but he'd rather go a thousand miles for a great party than to the end of the street for a noble cause." Joe shook his head. "He might have surprised you."

Xander sighed. "Spike's, Spike and I love him but he'll never change."

Joe stopped, bent down and picked up a small stone. "See this stone? It is a stone, it cannot be anything else?" Xander nodded. Joe took Xander's hand and pressed the stone into it and then curled round his fingers, so the stone was held in Xander's fist. "You'd be surprised. Open your hand," he instructed.

Xander opened his hand and a colorful butterfly flew out, Xander gasped.
"Change cannot always be seen," he smiled and nodded. "Give him a chance."

Spike ran passed them. "Time to hustle people!"

Xander looked up. "What?"

"Your mate Omar, appears he can't live without you!" Spike retorted snidely.

For a moment Xander glared at Spike's retreating back, then looked behind them. "Fuck!" He exclaimed. Jeeps, armored vehicles and tanks appeared along the skyline. He and Joe ran as fast as they could after Spike.

Spike slowed to a walk when they reached the rough terrain at the base of the mountain. It was rock strewn, uneven and rough. "This terrain will slow them down." Xander walked beside him and looked up at the moutain. "How do we get over that?" The mountain was steep with a craggy, rocky face.

"Here," Joe was already climbing. "there is a goat path."

Spike snorted. "Bloody Hell do I look like a fucking mountain goat?"

There was the rumbling sound of a tank. "Xander, why does this guy want you so bad?" Spike raised an eyebrow. "What you do for him you never did for me?"

Xander's hands rested on his hips and he scowled, squaring off with Spike. "And just what the Hell does that mea....?" A tank appeared round a bend, Xander and Spike began to climb.

Omar scanned the rocky face of the mountain, it was full of crevices, large overhangs and small, stone alcoves. His armored vehicle rumbled along below.

The goat path was narrow, steep and rough as it wound along and up the mountain. They pressed themselves as flat as they could to the mountain face, fingers curled tightly into the rock. The overhangs made it hard to spot them from below and several vehicles passed underneath them without realizing they were there. Spike stayed as close as possible to Xander, ready to grab him if he slipped. Common sense dictated that he probably couldn't stop the brunette from falling, but he found a strange comfort in knowing that they'd fall together. Xander's foot slipped and Spike grabbed for him, he struggled desperately and at last found his footing, but a dislodged rock tumbled and crashed down the mountain, there were shouts from below and they were spotted.

Automatic gunfire sprayed the rock face. Joe pulled Xander into the shelter of a small alcove and Spike squeezed in.

"Do not worry, I do not think it is my destiny to die on this mountain." Joe comforted.

"What about us mate?"

There was silence.

"Great!" Spike growled.

The firing ceased.

"Xander Harris, I wish you no harm. I am your friend, your fan, surrender, put an end to this madness." Omar shouted.

"No!" Xander yelled.

Omar turned and grabbed a small rocket launcher from Rashid.

"Fucking fag!" He spat.

Omar took aim and fired, he aimed too high and dislodged rock from above them.

Rock rained down in front of their sanctuary and thundered down the mountain to crash onto several of the vehicles and men below. When the dust cleared Spike peered out. They shouted and whooped at the disarray below, the tangle of rock and vehicles. Omar gave a roar of frustration and his soldiers began to climb up the rock face.

"Go, climb!" Spike snapped, shoving Xander ahead of him. The order changed, Xander went first, then Spike and Joe brought up the rear, convinced it was not his destiny to die on the mountain.

Xander reached the top and grappled for a hand hold to pull him over the summit. A large, black hand grasped his and pulled him up.

Joe looked up, "Oh dear, Nubians. I'd rather hoped we might avoid them."
