Chapter 14/23 + Epilogue
Rating: NC17 Overall
The Nubians pulled up Spike and then Joe.
They were a slender, wiry people, about Spike's height or a bit less, their skins very dark and faces brightly decorated or painted white. Most carried spears and wore large hooped earrings and elaborate necklaces or neck collars of colorful beads. Some wore T shirts but most were bare chested. They wore wrap over skirts that came to the knee and were bright, with intricate patterns, they had bare or sandaled feet.
They seemed pleased enough to see them, smiling and shaking hands, thronging round them chattering noisily, Xander especially seemed to attract a great deal of attention and Spike stayed close. They ushered them along to their village.
Xander smiled happily. "They seem very friendly." Joe nodded. "Yes we are fortunate one of the poorer, friendly tribes." Spike hovered close to Xander, smiling and shaking hands. "Just keep smiling and hope they think we're from the Discovery Channel."
It was several miles to the village of mud and wooden huts. As they were led through the men were joined by women and noisy, happy children. They stopped in front of the largest hut, two men disappeared inside and came out joined by a third flanked by a short, slender youth of about sixteen. Xander stared at the boy's necklace of metal bottle tops, his eyes raked appreciatively over Xander.
"The Chief and his son." Joe whispered.
The Chief was Spike's height, but a good deal stockier, his face was decorated with intricate colorful patterns, his hair dyed bright red and hung down in dreadlocks adorned with beads. He wore a wide collar of red, white and yellow beads, arm bands and a longer red skirt. By contrast his son was plain, his face was painted ghostly white with his skin left as circles round the eyes so he resembled a skull. His only jewelry was his bottle top necklace, his skirt was the same as his father's but shorter.
The chief gave a bright, wide, white smile, showing far too many teeth for Spike's liking. Joe began to speak to him, faltering and struggling for words At the mention of 'Al-Jawahara' the Chief and the whole village gave a soft "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh." Joe beamed. "They have heard of me."
Spike looked puzzled.
The Chief answered Joe animatedly. Spike and Xander listened with feigned understanding.
"He says we are welcome here and that Kadir is two days over the mountains and he wishes us good fortune and a safe journey. Joe interpreted. Spike clapped and rubbed his hands together. "Great, thanks a lot Chief, let's make tracks people," he turned and he and Xander made their way through the smiling crowd.
The Chief's son laid his hand on Joe's arm and spoke to him. Joe looked up. "Wait, Just-Xander." Spike groaned and turned forcing a smile. "The Chief's son wishes to make a blessing on your union for loving days and passion filled nights." Spike smiled. "Well that's very kind, but," he gestured between himself and Xander. "there is no union, were not married or anything," he shrugged.
Xander's face fell like a stone.
Joe spoke to the boy. A cheer went up and eager hands pulled Spike and Xander back in front of the Chief. "Because you are not joined, the son, he wishes to court Just- Xander." Joe explained. Xander's jaw dropped. "He's about twelve!"
"Actually he's almost seventeen." Joe corrected. "Bloody Hell! What's his age got to do with it? " He glared at Xander. "Is no one straight anymore?" Joe raised a tentative hand. "Actually,I am." Spike snorted. "Look we're not married or anything, but Xander, he's with me."
Xander nodded eagerly.
Joe and the boy talked quietly. The Chief joined in. "The Chief says since there is more than one suitor, you must wrestle his son. "Excuse me. Don't I get a say?" Xander protested.
"No!" Spike, Joe, The Chief and his son answered in unison.
Spike assessed the youth, he was small and thin. It wasn't so much that Spike couldn't beat him, as how he was going to do it without hurting him. He turned to Xander and whispered. "This will be a piece of cake, only take a few minutes and the we're out of here." Xander nodded. "Don't hurt him."
Spike began to take off his turban. "Ok I accept," he handed his turban to Xander. "come on let's do this."
No one moved, Spike looked around, frowning. "People?" The Chief smiled broadly, pointed to his son and shook his head. "Hussein!" He called.
Everyone turned towards a nearby hut. The heavy bead curtain was pushed aside to reveal a mountain of a man who had to duck his head to pass through the doorway.
"Oh dear, I think this is very, very bad." Joe glanced at Spike.
"Huh? What's goin' on?" Spike questioned.
Joe and the Chief talked. "This is Hussein, he is the son's champion, it is he you must wrestle." Joe explained.
Xander grabbed Spike's arm. "Dear God Spike, you can't wrestle him!"
Spike stared. "You don't say?"
