Chapter 20/23+ Epilogue
Rating: NC17 Overall
A/N This is a slow train and Humphery is a fast Camel!
The sound of the rifle shot made Joe turn and he frowned, Spike and Xander were several carriages behind him, both kneeling on the roof. What were they doing there?
The shot also attracted the engine driver, he leaned out of his cab and saw the three men. He lent forward and banged on the side of the train. Four Soldiers riding on the outside platform of the next carriage looked up, the driver gestured and pointed to the roof and they began to climb. Spike and Xander saw the soldiers and began to crawl along the roof towards Joe, who stood and walked to meet them. When they met, Spike climbed down a ladder onto the external platform of the carriage and helped first Xander and then Joe down. He tried the carriage door, it opened and they hurried in.
The carriage was packed with people but they found seats, Spike next to the window, Joe facing, opposite him and Xander next to Spike. They kept their heads low and Xander pulled the shawl forward.
The warriors spread out and galloped alongside the rear of the train. it was traveling too fast for them to try to board. Despite being height challenged and not as fast as the horses, Humphrey was a stayer and his loping gallop meant he gradually overtook them and carried Oz alongside the rear carriages of the train. The soldiers entered the carriage and began to push their way through scanning the people for the three fugitives. The men kept their heads down and Xander's heart thumped wildly in his chest.
Oz looked across and his eyes lit up. Stone! He urged Humphrey nearer to the train, leaned across and knocked on the window. Spike jumped and stared incredulously at Oz. "Stone! Stone! I gotcha now Stone. Your ass is grass and I'm the lawn mower!" Spike gestured wildly for Oz to be quiet. "I'm on to ya Stone!"
The soldier yanked Spike's scarf from his face and Spike launched himself at the soldier tackling him to the floor of the carriage. Oz shouted with glee as he saw the two men fighting he was enjoying it so much he didn't notice the train heading for a narrow tunnel.
Luckily, Humphrey did.
Humphrey skidded to a halt, Oz kept on going. He catapulted over Humphrey's neck and hit the side if the tunnel entrance and slid down the wall. Very much concerned, Humphrey licked his face.
Tarak and his men couldn't follow, the tunnel emerged between two high, rock walls where they couldn't ride. "Come we must find another way to Kadir, we must be there before nighfall!" The riders turned away. Oz staggered up holding onto Humphrey's neck. "Stone, I'll get you." He croaked.
The tunnel was long and black, by the time the train emerged into the light the soldier was out cold and Spike, Xander and Joe were in the next carriage. Soldiers swarmed after them.
"Now what?" Xander asked Spike. "How the Bloody Hell should I know? Just keep going till we run out of train!" He snapped. "Joe mate, now might be a good time for you to use those mystical powers of yours."
Joe shrugged. "Alas Mr. Spike they don't work like that."
They moved from one carriage to the next, keeping ahead of the soldiers.
"Just what the Hell is it you can do?"
"I am a Holy man, I am able to channel the spirit that is within me and make things happen. The people believe I can perform great feats not within the capabilities of others. They call me The Redeemer and Jewel of The Nile." He shrugged.
"So what gives with Omar?"
"He knows that if the people believe in me, I can unite all the tribes regardless of their differences and they will follow me. He is a ruthless, ambitious man. He is rich and powerful, a leader of his tribe. He claims that I am a false prophet, that he has the same spiritual power as me. If the people believe him they will unite behind him and he will lead them into war."
"So what happens in Kadir?"
"To convince the people, he must first go through the Ritual of Fire. He must walk into the flames and not be burned. Without me to oppose him, he will then be made Emperor."
Spike shook his head. "To be blunt mate, why didn't he just kill you?"
Joe smiled. "He knows the truth and despite his wealth and power, he's superstitious. He would not risk hurting me, so he took me prisoner and intended to keep me as such until my natural death. He convinced most of the people I had disappeared."
Xander chewed his bottom lip. "I think I know how he intends to do it. When I was at his palace I overheard him talking to a magician called Ethan Rayne."
Spike frowned. "What, some David Copperfield type?"
"No, I don't think so. I think he might have been a real magician, y'know Black Magic."
Spike's lips twitched. "Bloody Hell Pet will you listen to yourself? There's no such thing. It's all mumbo jumbo, smoke and mirrors."
"Actually I've seen things..." Joe began.
"Don't you start!" Spike opened the carriage door and stopped dead.
The carriage was sumptuously decorated in black and gold. Soldiers were stationed at each side of the door. There was a sofa and a large, intricately carved desk. Rashid stood to the left of a seated Omar.
"Ahhhh my guests, we've been expecting you. Please come in and make yourselves comfortable. I don't normally travel by train, but as you know my helicopters had a small accident. " He gave a cold, thin smile.
