Chapter 9/25+ Epilogue

Rating: NC17 Overall

It was shortly after dawn and the morning was chill, clear and bright.

Spike dressed and then saddled Goliath. He returned to the tree and found Oz gone and the severed rope on the ground, he guessed at once what had passed during the night. The hawk, which normally would have been about, was nowhere to be seen. He cursed softly. He searched around, found Xander's clothes and packed them away.

He rode out of the forest and crested a grassy hill, immediately the hawk appeared circling and swooping around him calling softly. He raised his arm and the bird swooped, landing lightly on his gloved hand and his lips twitched into a smile. "Good morning Xander. It seems you had an eventful night." The bird ruffled it's feathers. "You let the boy go didn't you? Always too soft hearted for your own good," He smirked. The Captain was unsure how much the hawk really understood him and stroked it's breast gently and sighed. The hawk hacked mildly at the covered fingers. Spike chuckled. "Come on, we need to find Daniel."

Oz had run all night, he pushed thoughts about deserting Spike to the back of his mind. There were forces, things going on in the knight's life he didn't understand and they frightened him; and who was the handsome young man who seemed to be following them? Then there was the wolf and the hawk, he had the feeling they were part of a great and terrible mystery, but what part he wasn't sure he wanted to know. The knight seemed to manage well enough before he had come along, no doubt he would again; and as for going back to Aquila, there was no fucking way!

The plume of curling smoke caught his eye and the smell of roasting rabbit made his stomach growl. He crept forward, to investigate the owner of the fire and decide if he dare approach. He kept low using the rocks and grass as cover, the last few yards he crawled on his belly. He peered round a rock and quickly ducked back. "Shit!" He cursed softly.

Six of the Bishop's guard were sat laughing and talking round the campfire a rabbit roasting on a makeshift spit, their horses tethered nearby. Oz quickly assessed the situation. The men hadn't seen him and it would be easy enough to crawl back and go around them giving the camp a wide berth. He began to edge back.

Two hands grasped Oz's jerkin and yanked him to his feet. "Well, well what do we have here?" Oz struggled, twisting and turning in the guard's powerful grip. Another guard appeared and grasped him also. They forced his arms painfully behind his back and tied his hands with rope and marched him to the camp.

Jonathan stood up and walked toward him. "Well, well if it isn't the fucking sewer rat." He grasped Oz's jerkin. "Where's Navarre?"

"Navarre? Navarre? Oh yes, blond man, black horse, I saw him riding South toward Aquila." Oz nodded.

The soldier behind Oz spoke. "Then we should ride North Sir."

Oz twisted round. "It's not polite to assume someone is lying when you've only just fucking met them." He protested.

"Yet you knew we would." Jonathan reasoned. "We ride South toward Aquila!" He barked.

The guard dragged Oz by his collar, he looked upward. "That's not fair Lord. I told the truth! How do you expect me to learn any moral lessons when you keep confusing me?" He muttered.

The hawk circled looking for any sign of the boy. It swooped passed Spike calling and soared in a wider circle. Spike rode on. They were on a wide, grassy plain bounded by trees, he felt exposed and kept looking around; still, Xander would alert him to any danger.

As the hawk was grew tired, it swooped and landed on the offered hand and dozed there as they traveled on for another mile or so.

In the cover of the trees the guards waited. When they saw them they drew their swords and pulled back their crossbows. Spike was too dangerous to risk attempting to take alive.

Oz was seated on a horse, behind one of the guards. His hands still tied and he'd been gagged. He saw Spike riding straight into the ambush and he panicked. He managed to pull his arms over his head and tear the gag from his mouth. "Captain!" He yelled, as the guard knocked him from the horse and he sprawled on the ground.

The guards broke cover. Spike flung up his arm and with a screech the hawk soared away. He reached for his crossbow even as a bolt buried itself harmlessly in the thick saddle bag. He saw the guard who'd fired and shot him through the heart. Another bolt flew and embedded itself in his shoulder armor. Spike fired and the bolt hit the guard in the neck and he fell from his horse.

Goliath reared, his hooves pawing the air.

Three guards were riding at him swords drawn. Spike swung his crossbow and knocked one from this horse, he pulled the bolt from his shoulder and used it to stab a second guard in the stomach. Goliath's flailing hooves caught the third and sent both horse and rider crashing to the ground.

Oz struggled to his feet. His guard was taking careful aim with his crossbow. Oz ducked and picked up a stone and threw it with all his might at the guard's head and he toppled back and as he did so he loosed the bolt.

The bolt flew straight into the air and found a mark. The hawk screamed and began spiraling and tumbling down to earth. Spike heard the scream and looked up, he let out an anguished cry. "No! God please, no!"

The hawk plummeted to earth, at the last moment he spread his wings and landed lightly, staggered a step and fell on his side, the bolt protruding from his chest.

A look of pure, demonic fury crossed Spike's face. He drew his broadsword from the saddle and galloped towards the regrouping guards. Their nerve broke at the sight of the man riding toward them and they turned their horses and fled.

Oz had to leap for his life as Spike thundered passed him in pursuit of the guards, suddenly he broke off the chase and swinging in a circle rode back to the injured hawk. He pulled up a few feet from the bird. vaulted from the saddle and burying his broadsword blade in the earth, knelt at the stricken bird's side.
