Chapter 18/25+ Epilogue
Rating NC17 Overall
All was pandemonium, Oz leapt to his feet, Giles started at a dead run for the pond intent on stopping Xander from venturing onto the ice. Xander flung off the cloak. "No! God No!" He cried, and took several steps before the ice began to crack beneath his feet.
Giles stopped at the pond edge. "Xander for pities sake come back!" He begged. "The ice is too thin to bear your weight, we will lose you both!" He warned. Xander never hesitated but stepped forward, he heard the plaintive cries as the wolf as it struggled in the icy water and shouted over his shoulder. "I must help him, he can't get out! In the name of mercy Father help us or he'll die!"
Giles turned to Oz. "In the cart Oz, fetch the rope." Oz ran for the cart. "Xander lie down on the ice, spread your weight!" He instructed.
Xander did as he was bid and lay down on the ice and began to crawl out to the terrified wolf. The animal struggled in the water, each time it seemed as though he had a foothold and would pull himself free, the ice broke and he plunged back with an anguished, terrified cry, the hole around him ever expanding.
The ice beneath Xander cracked and snapped as he crawled, but held and at last he reached the wolf and grabbed for him, even in his terror the beast recognized Xander and made no move to harm him.
Giles took the rope from Oz and tied it round his waist and gave the other end to him. "Crawl out to them with the rope and I'll help to pull you back." Oz needed no second bidding and was already crawling out across the ice before Giles finished speaking. "Hold on Xander," he shouted. "I'm coming!"
Xander turned his head. "Hurry! He's tiring!" Xander gripped the sodden fur and heaved with all his might. The wolf pushed and it seemed as though he was free, but the ice broke and he fell back, disappearing for a moment beneath the icy water. Xander plunged his arms into the water and grasped the neck and pulled the creature's head up. At the best of times the black wolf was large and heavy, but with sodden fur there was little chance of Xander pulling the animal free on his own.
Oz slithered up beside Xander. "I can't lift him Oz, he's almost done for, help me!" Xander begged. Oz reached for the thrashing wolf and the creature sensing foreign hands snapped and snarled at him. Oz yanked back his hands. "He won't let me help!"
Xander struggled to pull the head round. "Stop it! Stop it Spike! He's trying to help!" Xander struggled to keep hold of the head while Oz secured a grip on the body, but the terror stricken creature wrested free from Xander's grasp and once more snapped and snarled at the helping hands.
Tears coursed down Xander's distressed face. "Oh God we're going to lose him!" He sobbed.
Oz made up his mind he couldn't, he wouldn't see it end like this. Without warning he plunged into the water. For a moment the freezing water robbed him of his breath and reason, ignoring the flailing paws of the wolf and it's slashing fangs he managed to get behind it and as Xander heaved he got his shoulder under the hind quarters and pushed with all his strength..
For a moment time seemed to stop. On the pond edge Giles prayed for a miracle, Xander heaved, Oz pushed and the wolf scrabbled at the ice with it's paws. It's hind quarters came free of the water and the wolf got it's legs under it. Xander clung on to the neck as it took a step onto the ice and collapsed onto it's side.
Xander grasped the wolf's fur and with his other hand reached for Oz and helped him struggle free of the water's deadly grip. Xander turned his attention to the unconscious wolf and with a firm hold on it's fur slithered backwards pulling the beast with him to the edge of the pond. Oz grasped the rope and Giles hauled with all his strength pulling him across the ice. The three of them reached the edge of the pond together. Giles ran for the cart and collected every blanket and skin he had thought to bring.
When he got back Xander was already wearing Spike's cloak and cuddling the unconscious wolf to him, sharing his body heat and crooning softly to him, his other arm wrapped around Oz's shaking shoulders. Giles swathed Oz in blankets and skins. He was pale and shivering as Giles helped him to the fire. Then he went back and helped Xander carry the wolf as close to the fire as they dared and once again Xander sat and cuddled the near dead creature to him beneath the cloak. He raised his pale, tear stained face to Giles. "We must live Father, we must live as men. Our lives are in your hands." He choked out.
Modesty a second thought, Giles helped Oz change clothes shrouded under a cloak. Then Giles heated the mead and gave a tankard each to Xander and Oz. He saw to it that Oz was swathed once more in blankets and skins and seated as close by the fire as possible, then he gave Xander more blankets for the wolf. Lastly he added wood to the already blazing fire.
Oz looked sadly at Giles. "Will he live?" He whispered. Giles shook his head. "He is a magic beast, were he natural he would already be dead, he was in the water too long to survive," he sighed heavily. "The same magic that saved the hawk may serve to save him, let us pray that it is so." He patted Oz's shoulder. "Amen." They both mumbled.
