Note1: This is Europe in 1501. Times and people were harsh. Life was cheap and plague rife. This is not a cuddly story and Spike is not a cuddly character. Some might find his treatment of Xander, questionable.

Note 2: My heartfelt thanks go out to my dear friend Bmblbee, for holding my hand through the writing and posting process. *Hugs*

Note 3: This is a plot driven story. What sex there is happens in the natural course of the plot and as part of Spike and Xander's relationship.

Note 4: This is a human/medieval Spike and Xander expect them to behave as such.

Summary: When Prince Rupert is usurped and ousted from his city, he lays siege. He decides to use a group of wandering mercenaries led by the charismatic but dangerous Spike to supplement his army. When he goes back on his word to allow the mercenaries 24 hours free hand to loot the City unopposed, Spike plots revenge. Unfortunately it is Rupert's 18 year old, scholarly son Xander who must pay the price.

They stopped and made a makeshift camp. Spike took most of the other mercenaries and disappeared, they were gone until late afternoon scouting out the castle. It was small and strongly built on a hill with no moat. This meant that anyone attacking had to attack up hill, making it difficult to mount a siege and it could be easily defended by a few soldiers. It was ideal for their purpose.

It had a turreted bastion at each corner with a low, square chimney smoking on one. The drawbridge was raised, but no lookouts posted. The mercenaries formulated a plan which would involve them all, including Xander.

Xander had been left with Drusilla, for one moment he considered stealing a horse and making a bid for escape; he was stopped by the thought of Spike or one of the others riding him down and of the thrashing he would no doubt receive, plus he had no idea where he was or how far from help. He met Willow for the fist time and was intrigued by the small, pale skinned redhead not a great deal older than himself, like Jonathan and Andrew she seemed strangely out-of-place. They talked together for some time and she revealed that she, Andrew and Jonathan had been together for years and considered themselves a family of sorts. She never revealed who the father of her stillborn child was but Xander suspected Lindsey, from the little she revealed. He found himself liking her and expressed genuine regret over the loss of her child.

It was dusk when Spike came for him, he was seated by the fire listening to Drusilla tell one of her stories when Spike strode up.

"C'mon Little Prince you're coming with me." Xander frowned and stood uncertainly. "Why?" Spike gave him an irritated look and grasped his wrist hard enough to bruise, a look passed between Spike and Drusilla and she made no move to interfere. "What have I told you about asking too many questions?" He pushed Xander ahead of him and herded him to the base of the hill. Andrew and Jonathan were already there waiting. Jonathan had a coiled length of heavy rope over his shoulder and in his hand a large spool of ribbon, Xander recognized from the wagons. Andrew carried his longbow and quiver, there was no sign of the others.

Spike pulled Xander to face him and grasped his shoulders to make sure he had his full attention. Spike spoke in a hoarse whisper. "We're going to climb up the hill to the base of the bastion and you're going to be quiet as a mouse, then you're going to help us get into the castle." Xander shook his head. "Me?" He whispered urgently. "No I can't."

Spike raised an eyebrow. "You can and you will!" He snapped, giving him a rough shake. "Now start climbing." The four of them climbed up the hill in silence. When Spike thought Xander was dawdling he gave him a push to urge him on. They reached the base of the bastion and Jonathan laid the rope on the ground and Spike tied the ribbon to it and they unwound it completely off the spool and tied the other end to one of Andrew's arrows.

Andrew stood back. "Can you make the shot?" Spike hissed. Andrew nodded. "If the ribbon is long enough," he replied quietly. Xander watched his brow furrowed in confusion. Andrew walked further back, aimed his bow skyward and loosed an arrow.

The arrow soared into the air trailing the ribbon behind it and skimmed the top of the bastion in an arc and landed on the other side. Gunn leapt forward and caught hold of the ribbon and the other men joined him and they pulled on it. Xander watched as the ribbon snaked up the side of the bastion and then the rope began to follow it. Suddenly he realized what was happening. "You can't be serious?" He whispered incredulously ."Even if you get up to the top of the bastion, what then?" Spike grinned. "We go down the chimney, make our way through the castle and lower the drawbridge and storm the castle."

Xander shook his head. "It's an insane plan. What do you need me for anyway?" The rope had reached the top of the bastion and disappeared. Jonathan came hurrying up. "Right they've got the rope, we're ready to go."

Spike looped the rope round his own waist and tied it tight. "Because Little Prince, you've seen the inside a castle, none of use have, you know the layout." Xander stepped back shaking his head. A look of anger crossed Spike's face. "I warn you my temper is short, don't do this Xander," he hissed. "No, no," Xander rushed to explain. "I only mean the layout of every castle is slightly different." Spike pulled him towards him. "You still have a better idea than any of us. Now get up there!" He pushed him to the wall of the bastion. "Hang on to me." Xander blinked, Spike rolled his eyes. Was the boy scared, stupid or both? "Xander put your arms around my neck and your legs around my hips and hold on," he commanded in hushed tones.

Spike could feel Xander tremble as he put his arms around his neck and pressed against him. Spike put his arms under Xander's and grasped the rope tightly. "Hold on tight boy, because I'm holding the rope, not you, you leave go and you'll fall." Xander crossed his legs behind Spike's hips. For a second brown eyes looked into blue and Xander felt a lurch in his stomach. Spike's head darted forward and he kissed him quickly, firmly on the lips, when he pulled back he smirked at the wide, round eyed, shocked look of the boy, that would keep him quiet.

Andrew and Jonathan looked at each other and grinned.

Spike yanked on the rope and slowly they began to be pulled up. Xander closed his eyes and clung on tight, subconsciously burying his face in Spike's neck, finding his scent and tight grip strangely soothing. Spike used this feet to stop them crashing into the stone and 'walked' up the wall, slowly they ascended. When he reached the turrets Spike grabbed hold of the top and helped Xander scramble up. Xander turned and helped pull Spike onto the flat roof. Spike unfastened the rope. They crossed the short distance to the chimney, it wasn't very tall and Spike jumped, caught hold of the top and pulled himself up and sat astride it. He reached down and pulled Xander up beside him.
