Note1: This is Europe in 1501. Times and people were harsh. Life was cheap and plague rife. This is not a cuddly story and Spike is not a cuddly character. Some might find his treatment of Xander, questionable.
Note 2: My heartfelt thanks go out to my dear friend Bmblbee, for holding my hand through the writing and posting process. *Hugs*
Note 3: This is a plot driven story. What sex there is happens in the natural course of the plot and as part of Spike and Xander's relationship.
Note 4: This is a human/medieval Spike and Xander expect them to behave as such.
Summary: When Prince Rupert is usurped and ousted from his city, he lays siege. He decides to use a group of wandering mercenaries led by the charismatic but dangerous Spike to supplement his army. When he goes back on his word to allow the mercenaries 24 hours free hand to loot the City unopposed, Spike plots revenge. They sat astride the chimney and Xander could feel the heat rising from the fire in the hearth below; fortunately it was little more than glowing embers, low flame and hardly any smoke. Spike nodded at him and swinging his leg over, began to climb down the inside.
The chimney was wide and square, rungs were set into the sides to aid the small boys who would clamber up to clean it and it was these they used to descend. When they reached the breast the chimney widened into the hearth below. They could hear the soft murmur of female voices, perhaps two or three and the heat made Xander sweat and his hair stick to his forehead. Spike stopped and lent down to see into the chamber. He didn't notice particulars only the number and sex of the people. There was a woman seated by a bed, a child in the bed, a maid servant fussing round and a worried looking older man stood at the foot of the bed armed with a sword.
They never knew what made the maid look round, but she saw Spike and screamed. "Devils! Devils in the chimney!" Spike leapt down and out, the maid ran and Xander scrambled after Spike. Spike ignored the women and went straight for the man who was drawing his sword, Spike wrested the sword from his hand and ran him through. Xander recoiled with a look of horror at the brutality of the act and gasped as Spike grabbed his hand and bundled him out of the door.
"Which way Little Prince?" Spike yelled. Wildly Xander looked round, he made for the farthest door then changed his mind. "Xander!" Spike snapped. Xander saw stone steps leading down. "Here, down here!" Xander started down the curving spiral steps and Spike yanked him back going first, sword ready. They could hear running feet and the maid still screaming about devils.
They came out in the kitchen. Maids and the cook screamed and scattered, male servants grabbed at Xander but shrank back as Spike moved to defend him. They heard the sound of more feet, shouting and the clank of armor. Spike shot him an urgent look. "Guards!" Xander spun round in a circle, there were several doors leading from the kitchen if he chose the wrong one, it would lead them deeper into the castle not out to the courtyard. Xander chose and made for one of the doors as two guards ran into the kitchen. Spike leapt after him over turning the table and blocking the guard's path.
They ran into the deserted great hall, Xander looked quickly around and then ran across to the door opposite, Spike on his heels. The guards and servants from the kitchen poured into the hall and gave chase. Xander struggled with the door and yanked it open, they all but fell into the courtyard. The portcullis and drawbridge lay directly across the courtyard, they ran for it.
Guards swarmed at them from every direction and Spike had no choice but to delay and engage a couple, wounding one and killing the other. They reached the drawbridge mechanism with its huge pulleys and cogs a maze of thick, heavy chains and great wooden leavers. Flummoxed, Spike gawped at it; they were trapped.
This was Xander's opportunity. Spike was trapped, he'd be taken most likely killed. He could surrender, explain his position and ask for help. He looked at Spike stood at bay as the guards closed in and something inside him shifted. This was the man who'd taken him prisoner, hurt him, raped him and yet had stood between Xander and a much worse fate, who'd fed him, saw to it his injuries were tended..... Who'd kissed him , took more notice of him than his father ever had and who was trusting his life to Xander now, Spike must have known that if Xander turned on him, trapped in the castle away from his comrades, he would stand no chance.
Xander grasped the lever and released the brake on the draw bridge. The noise was deafening as without the brake the chains ran free, clanking and clattering as the drawbridge crashed open and the portcullis rose. The waiting mercenaries swarmed across the drawbridge and engaged the guards. Spike shot him a grateful look and fell into the fighting.
Xander hung back, confused by his feelings and horrified at what he was doing. As he watched the fighting a movement caught his eye. A woman carrying a child was running towards the steps leading to the battlements. he watched, puzzled at first and then with horror as he realized what she was going to do. He ran for the steps. "Wait! Stop!" He shouted and ran up the steps. "Please, stop! We won't harm you.!" He pleaded. His fingers almost caught her gown as she jumped, he gasped and staggered back and then looked over at the sad, tangled mass of broken limbs and pooling blood on the rocks below.
Spike only saw Xander running for the steps, even though he was fighting his eyes tracked him and as he saw the boy start up the steps a feeling that he hadn't felt for a long time uncurled within him. Spike's stomach tightened and he felt the foreign feeling of fear. The stupid boy was overcome with remorse at what he'd done and was going to fling himself from the battlements!
Spike broke off the fight and sprinted towards the steps, he didn't waste his breath shouting. He took the steps two at a time and reaching the battlements flung his arm around Xander's waist and yanked him back from the edge and crushed him against his body. "What the fuck do you think you're doing boy!" He snarled.
Xander twisted his head round and blinked at him in amazement. "I was trying to stop them from jumping." Spike frowned and looked over at the crumpled bodies. "Oh," He abruptly let Xander go and shrugged. "shame." Without another word he started down the steps. Xander stared and then hurried after him. At the bottom of the steps he dodged around Spike and stood in front of him, bringing him to a stop. "You thought, what? I was going to jump?" Spike snapped at him. "God knows boy you're stupid enough." Xander looked up at the battlements. "And you rushed to stop me?" For some reason, the thought that Spike had rushed to save him, made him smile.
It was on the tip of Spike's tongue to shoot the boy down, to say that his father would hardly pay for the return of his corpse, but he didn't. He snorted, stepped around the boy and joined in the last of the fighting. Xander turned and watched him.
Drusilla saw it all and went to Xander slipping her arm round his waist and looking up at him, smiled and said quietly. "Spike's Puppy."
On the rocks below the castle the little girl tearfully shook the body of her dead mother. "Mama? Mama?" She looked round, the sky was beginning to lighten, she had to get away or the devils would get her. Reluctantly she left the corpse of her mother and began to crawl down the hill.
