It was if someone fired a starting pistol that only Spike and Oz heard, for suddenly both urged their camels forward and began to race headlong down the sand dune. Xander's camel determined not to be left behind, raced after Spike's, Xander hanging on as best he could. Wes chased after Xander. The Americans, their diggers, Giles and Snyder chased after them.
The horses found the soft sand hard going and soon lost ground to the camels. Spike and Oz reached the foot of the dune neck and neck and once on the flat sand their camels broke into a long striding gallop, Xander's followed close behind. Spike and Oz both urged their camels faster and Spike slowly began to pull ahead, Oz seeing what was happening, began to lash at Spike with his whip, Spike deflected the blows with his arm and tried to grab the whip from Oz's hand. Unable to get a firm grip on the whip, Spike reached for the front of Oz's shirt and his fingers curled tight in the material and he yanked Oz toward him and out of the saddle, he let go and Oz hit the sand between the two camels with a yelp. Xander's camel kicked him as he passed and Oz howled. "Serves you right!" Xander exclaimed.
Xander's camel drew along side Spike's and he grinned at the blond, amused, Spike raised an eyebrow and it was then Xander decided to make a race of it, he urged his camel on. Xander's camel put it's ears back, dropped it's neck and lengthened and quickened it's stride, Xander's eyes widened as he realized he had almost no control over the bolting beast and the camel drew away from Spike's in what was now a headlong flight. "Oh. Oh!" Xander wobbled precariously in the saddle, Spike frowned he didn't care if Xander reached Hamunaptra before him, but he found he did care if the lad fell and hurt himself; he slapped his camel and they gave chase.
Xander was the first to gallop up the ramp and into the City, Spike close on his heels. "Slow down Xander," he yelled. "slow down there's a really big...." Xander's camel came to an abrupt halt and he sailed, tumbling through the air and landed on his stomach in a sand dune. Spike pulled his camel to a halt and sighed. "Never mind.. You found it." Spike helped Xander brush off the sand, relieved when he found the boy no worse for wear.
The Americans quickly set up camp just outside the City, a small sea of tents. Then they descended on the temple, Mr. Giles issuing orders to the diggers in fluent Arabic from under his umbrella; sand, rock and rubble were soon being hauled away from the Temple doorway. Further to the West Xander led his small band through the City ruins in search of the statue of Anubis. "What is it we're looking for?" Spike asked. "A statue," Xander replied excitedly. "of Anubis."
"What's it look like?"
"It's black, a tall man with a jackal's head." Xander explained. "Oh that statue, " Spike nodded. "it's over that way." He pointed.
Xander gazed up at the black, cracked and worn head of Anubis, it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. Wesley sniffed. "Gives me the creeps." Xander sighed. "I think it's beautiful, how about you Spike?" Xander turned, Spike was nowhere in sight, he looked at Wesley, his older brother shrugged.
Wells stood beside Giles and squinted through his glasses at Xander and Wes. He spit onto the sand. "They know something we don't?" Giles looked up and snorted. "Know? What do they know... A drunkard and a boy," he sneered.
Xander, Wes and Snyder stood beside a deep and foreboding crevice close to the statue. "Look for mirrors," Xander instructed, Wes frowned. "If that leads where I think it does, there has to be mirrors." Xander concluded. Wes shrugged and began to search around, Snyder wandered off hunting for treasure and Xander began looking nearer the statue. He saw the edge of a large, ancient, round mirror in the sand and pulled it out and began cleaning it off. "Here, I've found one too." Wes pulled a twin mirror from the sand. "What you got there?" Xander looked up at Spike, he had a long rope coiled over one shoulder and was surrounded by shovels, pick axes, more rope and sleeping bags. He frowned a little wondering if he should ask where it all came from, decided he'd rather not know and smiled. "Ancient Egyptian mirrors." Spike frowned. "See that crevice?" Xander gestured. " If it leads where I think these mirrors positioned correctly, are going to provide light." Spike's frown deepened. "You want to go down the crevice?"
"Yes." Xander nodded. "It should lead to an underground chamber. The legs of Anubis stretch far beneath the sand, somewhere there according to Bembridge Scholars, there should be a secret compartment containing the golden book of Amun Ra." he was nearly vibrating with excitement, Spike shrugged. "Ok."
Spike walked to a large, decorated, stone pillar and slipped the rope around and began tying it off. Xander looked up. "Wes you're supposed to be cleaning the mirror, not playing with it!" Wes huffed, Spike grinned at him. "Bossy bugger," Wes mumbled. Spike glanced at Wes and then Xander, he crossed back over to him, Xander looked up. Spike looked uncomfortable for a moment and then produced a rolled up piece of canvas. "I, I thought you might like.... could use these, I got them off our American Brethren." He handed Xander the canvas, carefully Xander untied the laces and unrolled it. It was a set of beautifully made archeologists tools. "Oh!" Xander gasped. "I thought you might need them if.. y'know." Spike motioned digging. "Oh, yes, they're wonderful." Xander smiled broadly, Spike nodded, turned and went back to his rope.
Wes saw the whole thing and as Spike got near he cleared his throat, Spike looked at him. "Barstow, Xander's my little brother and despite appearances, I do care about him," he said quietly, Spike nodded. "you and I are men of the world, he's not." He cast a glance and Xander. "I'd rather not see him with a broken heart, please don't start something you're not prepared to finish." Spike looked at Xander and then Wesley. "It's not his heart you have to worry about mate." Wes frowned and then his face slowly brightened. "Oh," he paused. "oh.... I see." He placed his hand on Spike's shoulder and smiled. "He likes you too."
"Wes!" Xander snapped and Wes polished his mirror for all he was worth.
