Spike fed the rope carefully down the crevice, Xander, Wes and Snyder watched him. Besides the guns in his shoulder holsters he had two more pushed into his belt, he pulled them out passed one to Wes and the other to Snyder, Xander frowned and held out his hand. Spike shook his head. "Uh, uh," Xander opened his mouth to protest, Spike cut him off. "you're sticking with me, if anything wants you it has to get through me." Xander's mouth snapped shut and a warm feeling unfurled through his body and he ducked his head.
Spike grasped the rope. "Watch out for bugs, I hate bugs!" Synder shuddered. Spike jumped down into the narrow crevice and repelled down, soon the crevice opened out and he dropped into open space, dangled and then dropped cat-like onto the floor of a large chamber. Xander dropped down unlit torches, Spike caught them, he held the rope while Xander clambered down, catching him as he dropped the last few feet, he did the same for Wes as Xander peered off into the eerie darkness. Wes held the rope for Snyder while Spike lit a torch using a match from his pocket and striking it on the wall, Xander gasped. Wes wrinkled up his nose. "Dear God what's that awful stench?" He looked up as Snyder dropped down and realized the smell was getting worse. "Oh!" He let go of the rope and walked away leaving Snyder dangling in mid air, flapping is hand under his nose. "Do you realize," Xander said breathlessly. "we're standing in a room no-one has been in for over three thousand years?" Xander wandered off and Spike trailed him holding the torch. Xander found what he was looking for, a large, round hinged mirror on a stand. He cleaned off the cobwebs and motioned Spike out of the way, he tilted the mirror. "And then, there was..." He got it in the right position, it caught the light from the mirrors on the surface and the light bounced and reflected on other mirrors placed around the chamber making it light up. "light!" Xander grinned, Spike grinned back. "Ancient Egyptian trick." Xander said proudly, Spike nodded. "Neat trick."
The room was large with narrow passageways leading in several directions. There were broken stone slabs that had once stood as tables, small ornate jars and wicked looking knives, hooks, pokers and cauldrons littered about the floor. "Oh my God, " Xander mumbled in awe. "it's a Sah-Netjer."
"A what?" Spike's eyebrows rose. "A preparation room." Xander explained. "Do I want to know in preparation for what?" Spike asked.
"For your journey into the Afterlife." Xander put on a 'spooky' voice. Spike shook his head. "Uh?"
"Mummies old son, this is where they made the mummies." Wes clarified, giving him a friendly nudge. "Oh." Spike nodded, drawing a gun.
Xander headed for one of the passages, Spike gently drew him back. "Let me go first." Xander nodded and moved behind Spike, Wes followed him and the warden brought up the rear. The passage was narrow and cobweb infested and even the light from the three torches didn't seem to penetrate the blackness more than a few inches. They inched their way along until they heard a noise and each froze. It sounded like someone clawing with sharp nails inside the walls, they cast glances at each other and then moved again. The blackness seemed to thicken and move like a living entity around them and the noise grew louder and louder. "What is that?" Wes hissed. Icy fingers skittered up and down Xander's spike and he edged nearer to Spike. "Sounds like....." Spike shrugged his shoulders. "bugs." Snyder lent forward. "What'd he say?"
"He said, 'sounds like bugs'." Xander whispered. "Bugs!" Snyder yelped. "Bugs! I hate bugs." He cast his torch around causing dancing, shifting shadows, but saw nothing. Abruptly as it had begun the clawing, scrabbling noise stopped and silence fell, Spike cocked his pistol, Xander held his breath, Wes licked his lips nervously and Snyder farted, they all glared at him. "What? I'm nervous."
They moved slowly forward and the passage began to widen into a small space dominated by the bottom of a huge, half-buried statue. The lower half of Anubis. Dark, narrow passages led away in several directions. Spike snorted. "Well, there's your legs." Xander moved forward and touched the statue reverently. "The secret compartment should be somewhere about here." He looked, pushed, prodded and pulled at the statue. Almost immediately strange, eerie noises filled the small space like echoing voices and then stopped as quickly as they had started. Spike moved his torch around and shadows danced and flickered on the walls but there was nothing. Spike relaxed a little.
Another noise drew Spike's attention and he tensed anew, it came again and he drew Xander behind him and motioned Wes forward, Wes stepped up brandishing his gun. The noise came from a passageway behind the statue, a scraping, shuffling noise getting nearer and nearer, Spike passed his torch to Xander and drew and cocked his second gun. Louder and louder the noise drew nearer, Spike waited and then with a nod to Wes, they both leapt forward and recoiled. Three sweaty, dirty men appeared, cocked and aimed guns in their hands, the Americans, Oz, Giles and a number of native diggers behind them. "Ya scared the beejeezus outta us Barstow!!" Levenson drawled. "Likewise." Spike half smiled.
"Hey," Wells saw the toolkit in Xander's hand. "that's my toolkit." He moved forward, Spike blocked him gun raised. "I don't think so." Wells stepped back. "Ok, sure I'm mistaken." Xander stepped forward. "Well have a good day gentlemen, we have a lot of work to do.." Giles pushed his way forward. "Push off, this is our statue." Xander frowned. "We got here first." Both sides raised their guns. "This here's our statue friend." Mears growled. "I don't see your name on it mate," Spike replied. "Well there's only four of you and fifteen of me your odds are not so great Barstow." Oz remarked. "I've had worse ." Spike grinned. "Yes, me too," Wes chimed in. Spike glanced at him, Wes grinned and nodded. Xander grew increasingly alarmed, he moved and his foot caught a pebble, he looked down in time to see it disappear through a gap in the floor and land with a hollow sound, there was a room below this one!
"Oh for heaven's sake gentlemen, let's stop squabbling like children," Xander moved between the opposing sides. "if we're going to work together we must learn to share." He began to gently push down the raised guns. "There's room for us all." He turned to Spike and put his hand on his arm, Spike frowned at him. "There's other places to dig," he said pointedly. Spike took in Xander's expression and lowered his gun.
