Giles jerked awake and realized the book was gone and looked frantically around, the boy! He scrambled up and began to race toward Spike's camp, as he neared he heard Xander reading from the book. "Nooooooooooo you must not!" He yelled as he stormed up "You stupid boy!" He snatched the book from Xander's hands. "You stupid imbecile boy, did your father and your own studies teach you nothing? Are you mad?" He roared. Xander stood stunned and blinking at the irate Egyptologist, but Spike leapt into action. His fingers grasped the front of Giles shirt and he propelled him back several feet, a look of fury on his face. "Don't yell at him!" Wes emerged from his tent and looked round confused. "What's going on?" Giles dropped the book and stood nose to nose with Spike. Spike snarled. "I asked him to read from that bloody book, you want to yell at someone mate, you yell at me!" Giles swallowed unnerved by the blond's fury. "I, I, you don't understand," he stammered. "Enlighten me." Spike snapped. The Americans, woken by the yelling gathered round. "Take it easy Barstow, Mr. Giles ain't hurtin' your boy." Mears commented, Spike shot him a dirty look.
From out in the desert there came a piercing, high pitched whine, everyone looked including Spike. "I say, " Wes adjusted his glasses. "what's that?" Giles eyes opened wide. "The boy's signed our death warrant, we're all dead," he muttered. Spike let go of Giles shirt and peered into the darkness. "Dunno, but it's getting nearer." He cocked his rifle. Louder, nearer the noise came, Spike began to back towards Xander, searching the darkness for the source of the noise, he looked up and saw a shifting, moving, black mass swirling through the ruins coming towards them, the whine was the beating of thousands of locust wings. "Run!" Spike yelled grabbing Xander by the wrist and dragging him with him. They all ran as one towards the shelter of the temple, all except Giles. The Egyptologist stood rooted to the spot as the entire camp was enveloped by the voracious insects. As they blanketed him he stared hauntedly at the Book of The Dead. "What have we done? What have we done?" He muttered.
They ran along the twisting passage, taking a different route to the Americans, until they could no longer hear the locusts. Wes beat at himself, just in case any had landed on him. "By Jove, did you see that? "Grasshoppers, billions of grasshoppers." Spike frowned. "One of them plagues yeah? The Grasshopper Plague." Xander huffed. "Locusts, not grasshoppers and not a plague, every few years their population explodes and they take flight." Xander stepped forward and something squished under his foot. "Ewwwwww!" He looked down. Spike took a torch from the wall and held it near the floor. "Bloody Hell." The floor was alive with slimy frogs. "So frogs do the same?"
In another part of the temple labyrinth the Americans and Oz hurtled headlong up the passageway Wells tripped and fell, his glasses skittered across the floor. He felt around for them as running feet approached. "Help me, help me find my glasses please." Oz brushed passed him, crunching Wells glasses underfoot. "Oh." Wells staggered to his feet arms outstretched and staggered along as the blurry figure disappeared. "Mears, Levenson?" He called but no-one answered, the passageway was silent . He held his arms out and groped his way along, squinting he thought he saw a movement. "Who's there?" The movement came again, this time from behind him and the hair on the back of his neck rose. Wells pulled his gun. "Is there anyone there?" He turned round and felt an icy chill on the back of his neck, he spun round. "Who's there?" A blurry figure appeared ten feet in front of him. "Mears?, Levenson?" He began to stagger toward the figure, it didn't move, he neared, tripped and reached out. His hand disappeared inside Angelus chest cavity and he jumped and pulled it out, holding it up to his face. His hand was covered in molten, rotting flesh, he started to scream and a skeletal hand was pushed over his mouth.
Spike, Xander and Wes picked their way up the passage crushing the squelching frogs underfoot, when the ground began to shake and rumble in front of them and suddenly hundreds of scarabs boiled up from the sand. All three of them screamed, turned and ran. Spike brought up the rear fending the scuttling, chasing beetles off with his torch. They reached some stone steps and ran up them, in desperation Spike threw his torch into the beetles, but they didn't halt. They ran on up the steps, pedestals on either side stood like islands, Wes jumped for one, Spike another, Xander ran on even as Spike yelled for him to jump, the beetles after him. Xander saw a grotto in the stone wall to the right of the steps and he jumped into it as the beetles scurried passed. Spike and Wes jumped back onto the steps, Xander leaned back on the wall with a sigh of relief, the wall moved and Xander fell through the opening.
Xander sprawled on is back in the dusty passageway, he picked himself up and dusted off. A movement caught his eye and he held his breath and then breathed again a Wells, his back to him staggered, groaning into view. "Thank God, Mr Wells, you scared me." he walked toward him and as he neared Wells turned. It took Xander a moment to realize what he was seeing, Wells had turned to him with bloody, empty eye sockets, Xander screamed and ran almost colliding with Angelus. Fear robbed him of his voice, Xander recoiled and backed away, Angelus looked at him with Wells eyes and pursued him. Xander looked around for escape and found none that he could reach, his back hit the wall and he stared in terror at the advancing mummy. He found his voice, little more than a whisper. "Wells, help me, please." Wells made a croaking, choking sound and opened his mouth, he had no tongue. The mummy drew very close and then stopped. It gazed at Xander cocking it's head first left and then right. Xander felt hysteria bubbling inside him, Angelus blinked his crusty eyelids and reached out a skeletal hand and spoke softly.
