It took only moments for Spike to take in the room, Xander was gone, there was no sign of a struggle and no blood. He tore along the hallway and bounded down the stairs almost sending a startled Wes reeling. "I say, steady on old......" Wes clutched the banister. "He's gone!" Spike snapped without pausing, Wes's jaw dropped and Mears and Levenson jumped back as Spike sprinted passed them through the lobby and out the hotel. They looked at one another and blinked.
Spike leapt down the narrow hotel steps. It was very gloomy outside with sinister, black clouds and jagged lightning flashing across the sky and rolls of thunder. People hurried for shelter looking up and muttering. Spike searched the compound for any sign of Xander, or any clue as to where he might be. People jumped out of his way as the frantic looking blond hurried along.
Xander clutched his new purchase happily, turning the leaves of the small volume he was soon lost in reading. He made his way out of the book shop nearly colliding with a tall Arab gentleman in flowing desert robes, he apologized and stepped into the compound. A bright flash of lightning and crash of thunder made him look up and he frowned at the black clouds, best get back to the hotel.
Spike saw the familiar figure, dark, tousled head bent and nose buried in a book walking toward him. Relief flooded his body and he almost sobbed, but it was short lived and quickly replaced by righteous anger, he'd told the little twerp to stay in the room! "Xander!"
Xander's head jerked up at the roar of his name. Spike was stalking purposefully toward him a look of fury on his face, Xander's smile faded as Spike stood almost nose to nose with him, eyes blazing and the muscle twitching ominously in his cheek. "Bloody Hell boy, don't you ever do as you're damn well told?" He growled. Xander gave him a puzzled look and made to speak. "I told you to stay in the room!" Spike cut him off, voice vibrating with emotion. Xander waved the book in front of Spike. "But see," he said excitedly. "I remembered seeing this book, it's about Seti I and I thought there might be something in it about our mummy." Spike grabbed his wrist and began towing him toward the hotel. "Fuck the book!" Spike hissed. "We've got trouble!" Xander scowled. "Uh?"
Xander clutched his book and trotted to keep up as Spike towed him, suddenly there was a sharp crack of thunder and hail and fire began to fall. People ran screaming, camels bellowed and ran in fright, horses reared and bucked, whinnied and stampeded terror stricken, the water in the ornate fountain boiled and steamed, wooden buildings, roofs and palm trees caught alight.
"He's here." Spike pulled Xander along.
"The creature, the mummy."
"Are you sure?"
Spike looked at him incredulously. "Hail, fire, steaming water......Pretty much, yeah."
They reached the hotel steps and almost collided with Oz running down them, he turned to run back the way he had come, Spike grabbed the back of his shirt. "Oz, you little stinkweed, where'd you slink off to?" Oz looked affronted. "You left me in the desert to rot, Barstow." Spike looked sheepish. "Oh yeah, sorry about that," he shrugged. "why are you here?"
"Mr Wells, I feel responsible, I came to see if there was anything I could do."
A suspicious look crossed Spike's face. "Don't give me that, you never had any scruples."
" I know, know where I could steal some?" Oz forced a laugh. Spike grinned and punched his arm, Oz winced. Abruptly the maelstrom ceased and silence fell. Spike and Xander looked skyward, Oz seized his chance and scurried away.
A blood curdling scream came from Wells room, Spike drew his gun and bounded up the hotel steps, Xander on his heels. They ran through the lobby and Spike vaulted up the stairs and crashed into the room skidding to a halt. Xander gasped and recoiled in horror. What was left of Wells was in his chair, dry and shriveled up to half his size drained of all fluids and devoid of bodily organs. A low moan drew their eyes to the opposite side of the room. As they watched in morbid fascination Angelus started to regenerate, thick skin formed over powerful new muscle structure, tendons rippled, bones bulged and reformed. He moaned, his mouth stretching to inhuman size and he screamed in pain. Then it was all over and he turned looking like a corpse-vision from Hell.
"Shit! We have serious trouble." Spike quipped.
Angelus cocked his head and stared at Xander, stalking towards him, Xander backed away round the room, Angelus watching him. Spike stepped forward. "Back off mate!" He snarled, Angelus kept coming, Spike began firing, pulling his second gun and blasting away. Bullets ripped into Angelus and some passed straight through him, he didn't seem to mind. Wes and the Americans piled into the room and froze, stunned at the sight before them. Guns empty, Spike tossed them away and took a swing at Angelus's head, his fist passed right through the flesh and skull, he stared for a moment and then yanked his fist back. The area where his fist had been immediately began to rot and disintegrate as if infected. Angelus bellowed in anger and tossed Spike effortlessly across the room sending him crashing into Wes and the Americans and they all sprawled on the floor.
Angelus turned to Xander and held out his hand. "Xan-uk-amun come now," he stepped nearer, Xander stared in horror unable to move. "you saved me from the undead, I thank you. Now we shall be immortal together." He leaned forward intending to kiss him, Xander shank back in terror.
The white cat Xander petted earlier leapt onto the table and turned hissing at Angelus and swiped at him with it's claws. Angelus staggered back with a shriek, obviously frightened and he seemed to disintegrate. A vortex of sand formed in the room, it moved swirling towards the shuttered windows, they were flung open, the swirling sand passed through and the shutters slammed closed.
Spike stared. "Bloody Hell."
