Summary: Over 3,000 years ago Angelus the high priest of Seti I, was given the assignment of preparing the recently dead for their journey into the afterlife. Angelus made one terrible mistake - he became smitten with Xan-uk-amun, the male concubine of the Pharaoh himself. Driven mad by jealousy and love, Angelus and Xan-uk-amun murdered the Pharaoh. Angelus's punishment was to be buried alive and suffer the torment of an eternal life in his wretched tomb. In 1925, a band of adventurers seeking fame and fortune - led by William (Spike) Barstow, an English expatriate who had joined the foreign legion, and Xander Harris, an amateur archeologist - find a previously unknown burial site in Egypt. The team starts to dig, hoping to find lost riches, but instead they disturb the tomb of Angelus, and soon the cursed priest rises from his grave to wreck vengeance on them and humanity.

Chapter 28/31 + Prologue

Rating: NC17 Overall

Xander followed Angelus down the narrow, twisting, broken steps to the underground cemetery, it was thick with cobwebs, huge rats and beetles scurried away and eerie noises bounced off and around the walls. He hesitated wondering if he could make a run for it, they'd catch him but it might buy him more time. Oz gave him a sharp shove in the back and gestured with his torch. "You might want to rethink your tactics," Xander glared at him. "Uh?" Oz looked puzzled. "I don't think Angelus would appreciate you shoving me around." Oz looked worried and glanced at Angelus, the priest was scowling at him, he took a step back and Xander smirked and carried on descending.

Armed with torches Spike, Ardeth Bay and Wes made their way through the narrow passageway descending to the bowels of the necropolis. They were stopped by a rock fall which blocked their path, Spike and Ardeth Bay put their torches in a crevice and began to move away the rocks and rubble, Wes supervising. "Take them from the top first, the big stones, don't want the lot falling on us." He watched. "Put your backs into it chaps!" He urged. Spike turned and glared at him, Wes smiled nervously. "Yes well, good work, chop, chop."

A shiny object caught Wes's eye, an amethyst beetle set in the wall, he worked it loose and held it in his palm. "I say chaps look at this." The beetle moved and the casing cracked open and an agonizing pain shot up Wes's arm as it began to burrow into his hand, he screamed and screamed as it reached his arm. Spike spun round. "Now what?" He snapped. "Arm, my arm!" Spike saw Wes terrified look and tore open his sleeve and saw the lump making it's away toward his shoulder. "Do something, please!" Wes begged. Spike drew his knife. "Hold him!" He said to Ardeth Bay and the big Medjai grasped Wes. Wes eyes opened in horror as Spike's knife descended "I said do something, but not that!" Wes shrieked as Spike cut into his shoulder in front of the beetle and flicked it out onto the floor. It landed on it's back, righted itself and scuttled at them. Spike drew his gun and shot it. The shot echoed round the passageway.

The gun shot echoed into the cemetery and Xander smiled. "Spike." Angelus scowled and stepped up to an altar, a twisted black altar where three thousand years earlier he had tried to raise Xan-uk-amun. He grasped a Canopic Jar and tipped the remains into his hand and crushed them and then blew the dust against a mausoleum wall and muttered some words, the wall began to come alive, Oz and Xander stared transfixed. Two hideous mummies appeared from the wall and bowed to Angelus. His long dead priests. Xander stepped back in awe. "The Bembridge Scholars never mentioned this."

"No kidding." Oz mumbled.

Angelus spoke in Hebrew. "Go, kill them and raise the others, then find The Book of The Living." The priests shuffled down the passage.

Spike bandaged a miserable looking Wes's arm with his torn shirt. "From now on, keep your hands to yourself, don't touch anything." Wes nodded vigorously. They had cleared a small opening, enough to squeeze through. Spike tossed his torch ahead and then scrambled through, there was a large, dark chamber, he lifted is torch, there was a shaft in the ceiling and he could make out a mirror at the top, like the ones he'd seen before. Remembering Xander's trick he took out his gun and took aim, the bullet hit the rim of the mirror and it spun, slowed and stopped. A shaft of light entered the chamber, bounced off a mirror hitting other mirrors set around the perimeter and the chamber flooded with light, his jaw dropped. Wes and Ardeth Bay scrambled through behind him, gasped and gazed in awe. It was a vast treasure chamber, filled with the golden wealth of Ancient Egypt. Wes opened and shut his mouth several times without a sound, Spike took his rifle from his pack and then they walked down the sweeping steps to the floor of the chamber passing row after row of golden statues, golden chests filled with glittering gems, whole chariots made of gold, gold couches and beds....

"Can you see?" Wes said breathlessly.

"Yes." Spike replied.

"Is it real?"

"It's real."

"Can we?"

"Bloody Hell no!"

The ground began to shake and bony, paper skinned hands began to push up through the floor of the chamber, followed by heads and bodies as the mummified priests dragged themselves from the sand, Spike cocked his rifle. "Who the Hell are they?"

"Priests, Angelus's priests." Ardeth Bay replied.

"I've never killed a priest."

"They are evil, cursed, they matter not."

"Alright then." Spike blasted one with his rifle.

Angelus muttered in Hebrew while he prepared the altar, Oz translated. "Prince Angelus wants your heart." Xander blushed. "Tell him I'm very flattered, but it's already spoken for, and for what it's worth I think he got a raw deal, I mean all he did really was fall in love with the wrong person, he shouldn't have killed Seti of course and I can understand him wanting his beloved back, but killing me won't achieve that," he babbled. Oz gaped and blinked. "Yes it will." Xander shuffled. "Oh yes.... I suppose it will." Oz shook his head. "The Prince wants your heart," he started over. "and your brain, your liver.............. and how do you say those slimy things in your stomach?"

"Intestines."

"Thank you, yes those too." He nodded and grinned. Xander scowled. "What? He only wants my organs?" He was rather offended. "What happened to exchanging souls?"

"I'll ask." Oz asked, Angelus grinned and replied, Oz giggled. "Apparently, when you kissed him, he realized you were no longer pure, you had let another put his cock inside you." Oz snickerd. "Bet it was Barstow."

Xander was furious. "That's personal! And anyway Xan-uk-whatever wasn't 'pure' as he puts it."

Oz looked at Xander sadly. "That's true, but alas it was your biggest attraction, he fancied having Xan-uk-amun as a virgin." Oz leered. Xander huffed and stepped up to Angelus. "Now look here, I demand you do a sou............" Angelus knocked him out and gave him a cold, malevolent glare before stalking off into the mausoleums.

Nervously Oz looked around and scurried away.
