Summary: Over 3,000 years ago Angelus the high priest of Seti I, was given the assignment of preparing the recently dead for their journey into the afterlife. Angelus made one terrible mistake - he became smitten with Xan-uk-amun, the male concubine of the Pharaoh himself. Driven mad by jealousy and love, Angelus and Xan-uk-amun murdered the Pharaoh. Angelus's punishment was to be buried alive and suffer the torment of an eternal life in his wretched tomb. In 1925, a band of adventurers seeking fame and fortune - led by William (Spike) Barstow, an English expatriate who had joined the foreign legion, and Xander Harris, an amateur archeologist - find a previously unknown burial site in Egypt. The team starts to dig, hoping to find lost riches, but instead they disturb the tomb of Angelus, and soon the cursed priest rises from his grave to wreck vengeance on them and humanity.

Wes bounded down the steps with the key and the book, Xander ran to him. Spike struggled to his feet as Angelus stalked toward him, he was horrified to see that his right arm had regenerated. He turned to run and Angelus grabbed him and flung him twenty feet into a wall, he grunted painfully and slid down. Wes held the book, Xander turned the key. "Spike, keep him busy," he shouted over his shoulder. "No problem," Spike croaked struggling to his feet. "I'll just let him kill me," he added under his breath. Angelus advanced, Spike tried to dodge and the Priest caught him with a right to the jaw that sent him sailing through the air and crashing into a mausoleum. Dazed and knees buckling Spike was unable to rise.
The golden book unlocked with a hiss and frantically Xander turned the golden pages searching for the incantation. Angelus picked Spike up one handed around the throat and grinned, Spike was barely conscious. He lifted him off his feet and into the air, feet kicking feebly and tightened his grip. Spike struggled gasping for breath he couldn't get, his heart pounded and the world began to turn gray and silent. Wes watched Spike's horrific struggle and knew he was near death. "Hurry Xander, hurry!" He implored.
Xander's face lit up and he spun to face Angelus. "Kadeesh mal! Kadeesh mal! Angelus. Pared oos! PARED OOS!!"
Angelus dropped Spike and spun to face Xander a look of terror on his face, Xander smiled maliciously and shrugged. A high, cold wind blasted through the chamber and a ghostly chariot pulled by white horses appeared at the top of the steps driven by Seti himself and thundered towards Angelus and seemed to pass right through him and as it passed they saw Angelus in ghost form hanging from the back of the chariot screaming as it disappeared into the wall. Gasping, clutching his throat Spike staggered to his feet and over to Xander. Xander reached for him and then his eyes widened in horror as Angelus advanced towards them, Spike spun round. "Bloody Hell, I thought you said it would kill him?" He croaked, stooping and picking up a sword off the floor, they all backed away. "Yes, well I did!" Xander stammered. Angelus lunged at Spike, Spike lunged with his sword and drove it through his heart. Angelus gasped and fell to his knees.
Xander grinned. "He's mortal."
Angelus began to slowly disintegrate and turn to dust, as only the head and shoulders remained Angelus looked at Xander and grinned saying something in Ancient Egyptian, Xander translated. " 'Death is only the beginning.' " They all shuddered.
The eerie, cold wind blew and scattered the dust around the chamber.
Oz staggered under the weight of yet more gold filled saddle bags, he could barely move. He staggered to the wall and managed to hook them over a convenient staff, smiling when the weight lifted from his shoulder, the staff dropped down and there was a soft rumble. The wall began to drop down, Oz stepped away and stared in horror as the whole treasure chamber began to sink and tons of sand began to pour through the walls, he grabbed the saddle bag and ran towing it behind him.
The cemetery shuddered and the walls began to descend with a groan and rumble, Spike lifted a torch aloft. "Bloody Hell, now what?" Xander gazed around."It's Seti's trap the whole city is sinking beneath the sand!" Walls cracked and sand poured through.
"By Jove!" Wes hitched up the book. Spike grabbed Xander's hand and they began to run out of the cemetery. As they ran Wes tripped and lost grip on the book , it slid out of his hands and disappeared into a deep crevice, he picked himself up and ran on. Xander pulled away from Spike and doubled back and stood by the crevice gesturing wildly. "Wes how could you? You've lost the book!" Spike sprinted to him. "Spike, climb down and get it!" He urged. Spike grabbed his hand and towed him away. "Remind me to talk to you about priorities," he growled.
Oz scrambled along the narrow tunnel still dragging the gold, sand poured through the walls and the roof began to descend. He saw a wall coming down ahead of him, he looked desperately at the gold, then left go just managing to crawl through as the wall dropped down behind him.
Spike barreled into the treasure chamber dragging Xander behind him. Wes was already there gazing around at the gold. The ground shook and the whole place creaked and rumbled. Spike and Xander hurtled passed him, Wes gestured. "Couldn't we just, a handful....." Spike and Xander ran back to him. "No Wes!" Xander snapped. They grabbed a hand each and ran, Wes between them up the steps. Oz barreled into the chamber having come in a circle and ran after them.
Ahead the wall descended as they ran toward it. "Barstow!" Oz yelled. "Wait for me!" Everything was happening faster now once the destruction had been put in motion. Oz stumbled and fell, picked himself up and ran up the steps. Spike, Xander and Wes dived under the descending wall. "Barstow, Barstow!" Oz shrieked. Spike looked through the narrowing gap. "Run Oz, run!" He urged and Oz ran as fast as he could. The gap was narrowing, Spike shoved his arm through. "C'mon Oz!" Oz dived for the gap, Spike grabbed his hand and hauled him through, the wall crashed down pulling off Oz's sandal.
The four of them ran through the temple and out the door. Outside they dodged between huge, falling pillars and statues. Buildings crumbled and crashed to earth, the sand beneath their feet gave way as they ran. Bellowing camels ran passed them and the two Oz had tied tried to free themselves. They ran down the ramp and out of the City. Once on firm, desert sand they stopped and turned watching the destruction of the City as it sank from view. Oz looked about nervously and began to edge toward the large camel, without looking at him Spike growled. "I let you live Oz, take one more step and I'm changing my mind." Oz froze.
Wes gazed mournfully at where Hamunaptra had been. A hand landed on his shoulder "Arghhhhhhhhhhh!" He jumped and spun round clutching his heart. Ardeth Bay grinned down at him from the third camel. "Yes, well thank you, thank you very much for nearly giving me a heart attack," Wes whined.
Ardeth Bay smiled a them. "You have earned the respect and gratitude of myself and my people." Oz shrugged. "It was nothing."
"Not you!" They chorused together. Oz looked hurt.
"May Allah smile upon you always."
"And yourself." Wes gestured.
Ardeth turned his camel and rode away. "Yes anytime." Wes mumbled.
"Stay out of trouble." Spike called. "And he's just leaving us here." Wes mumbled.
Wes sighed deeply. "I guess we go home empty handed."
Spike and Xander gazed at each other. "Oh, I wouldn't say that," Spike purred and bent his head, his lips gently caressing Xander's, Xander's arms snaked around his neck and the kiss deepened. Wes rolled his eyes and turned. "Get a room you two," he mumbled, yanking Oz off the camel as he tried to mount and depositing him in the dust. Wes caught the rein of the smaller camel and scrambled into the saddle. Oz once again tried to mount the bigger camel, Spike hauled him off and sent him sprawling on the sand and helped Xander up. "Hey, that's my.............." Oz protested, Spike glared at him, he swallowed and watched Spike climb up behind Xander. Oz scrambled up. "What about me? You can't leave me here to rot." He whined. The camel rose and Spike grinned. "Well, you can start walking, or wait here a day or two, the camels should wander back, eventually." Xander nuzzled Spike's neck and Spike kissed him and they rubbed noses and smiled.
Oz kicked the sand. "You can't do this," he protested.
"Bye Oz." They all chorused.
Spike and Xander turned and rode after Wes, the setting sun glinted on the gold peeping out of the saddle bag behind Spike. As they kissed Oz stifled a sob and kicked the sand. His foot caught a small, gold trinket box, his eyes lit up.
Perhaps this wasn't a total loss after all.
This is the end of the adventure. At some future date they MAY be back in the sequel 'The Mummy Returns'. To everyone who read and/or commented my thanks, it makes writing that much more worthwhile.
HAMUNAPTRA has been nominated in the Running With Scissors Awards in the 'Bloody Colonials' category.
I'm giving you a rest from me until 10/11/09 when I'll be back with an 18 chapter story that is a first for me. My first cowboy and my fist more dominant (if hapless) Xander. A comedy Western 'The Duke and The Dirtwater Fox'. Based VERY loosely on 'The Duchess and The Dirtwater Fox'.
