'You can't hurry love'
Spike and Xander peered over the rocks at the stone and timber cabin below. Smoke curled from the chimney testifying that Xander had been right and the Rayne Gang was in residence. Close to the cabin was a corral containing their unsaddled horses and further on there was a well, a barn and a range of dilapidated timber buildings. They shank back behind the rocks. "Ok Spike here's what we do." Xander started to outline his plan, Spike listened intently.
"First of all the only way to and from the farm is the trail through these rocks so we need to set a trap. We'll stretch the rope across the trail between the rocks and you can lay the dynamite over there, " he pointed. "and make a real long trail of black powder from the dynamite up here and down the trail a ways." Spike nodded. "We can blow the dynamite, block the trail and carry on our way. Me an' Jack will go through the rocks to as near as we dare to the cabin. I'll open the corral and set the barn alight, the horses will stampede and the gang will come out to put out the fire and round up their horses. I'll dive in the cabin and use a stick of dynamite to blow open the strong box an' get the money. Then I'll ride hell for leather up here, pick you up and we'll high tail out of here," he grinned.
Spike folded his arms. "And suppose they don't go after their horses or they catch 'em real quick and come back while you're in the cabin?"
"They won't" Xander asserted confidently.
"Ok suppose it works, they're gonna come after us anyway."
"Well, the way I see it they're gonna waste time saddling their horses and that's assuming they even catch 'em. They'll come galloping up here and hit the rope, that should unseat a couple and if we blow the dynamite that'll block off the trail so they'll have to go through the rocks and that should give us plenty of time to get a head start to Salt Lake, it's only about five or six miles and once there, we disappear."
Spike scowled. "I don't like it."
"Got a better idea?"
"We forget the money and just go to Salt Lake." Spike said hopefully. Xander shook his head. "Not an option." Spike sighed. "Ok then, but you get injured and I'm gonna kill you." Xander grinned.
They stretched the rope across the trail and secured it to the rocks. Spike took the dynamite and black powder giving a stick of dynamite to Xander. Xander used a knife to cut off a piece of fuse and stick it in the end of the stick of dynamite. When they were all set Xander swung into the saddle and put the stick of dynamite in his mouth and took the reins in both hands, Spike peered up at him. "For God's sake remember that's dynamite and not a cigar, don't try and light it!" Xander grunted and nodded. Spike watched him ride away. "Be careful!" He called softly and then busied himself placing the dynamite and laying the black powder.
Xander and Jack picked their way carefully, quietly through the rocks until they were as near to the cabin as Xander dared. He left Jack hidden in the rocks with instructions to 'come a runnin' ' when he whistled and Xander edged nearer on foot. He studied the cabin for a moment, there was an occasional movement at the window but nothing outside, he was confident the entire gang was indoors. He ducked and ran for the corral slipping free the loop of rope that held the gate shut and then he sprinted for the barn and disappeared inside. In the rocks Spike saw him sprint and held his breath.
The barn was almost empty, but the timber was dry. Xander gathered some straw near the walls and set it alight, soon there was a good blaze and he ran for his hiding place in the rocks. The horses caught scent of the smoke and began to mill around and whinny. In the cabin the Rayne's were sitting down to eat. Ethan looked up. "What's wrong with them horses?" Warren frowned and looked toward the window just in time to see the wall of the barn explode into flame, he leapt to his feet. "The barn's on fire!" He bellowed. The horses bolted out of the corral gate and Spike watched as the gang poured out of the cabin falling over each other and pushing and shoving in their haste.
Flames shot skyward, wood crackled, bright sparks flew like fireflies and grey smoke billowed. Danny and Jonathan ran with buckets toward the well. Ethan squinted at the barn, it was well alight and not much use anyway. "Forget it boys, let it burn don't waste your time."
"What about the cabin?" Jesse asked. Ethan shrugged. "Wind's blowing the fire away from the cabin, so it'll be alright." The boys wandered back. Ethan sighed. "Best round up those stupid horses." The gang trudged in the direction their horses had disappeared.
Xander waited until the gang had gone some distance after their horses. Spike watched as he ran toward and disappeared inside the cabin. Inside Xander pulled back the rat chewed rug and grasped the ring handle of the trap door and heaved it up. There was a shallow hole with a large strong box. Xander wasted no time, he positioned the dynamite and lit the fuse and then bolted outside and hid round the side of the cabin. There was an explosion and smoke coughed out of the cabin door, before it had time to clear, Xander dived back inside.
The gang stopped and spun round. Ethan scowled. "That's the cabin. Warren, Danny fetch the horses, Jesse with me." Ethan and Jesse began to sprint back to the cabin, drawing their guns as they went. In the rocks Spike was practically jumping up and down as the watched Ethan and Jesse sprint back. "Xander come on, come on get out of there you lousy bum," he muttered.
There was a shrill whistle from the cabin, Jack began his run as Xander sprinted out of the door. Ethan and Jesse saw him. "Son of a bitch!" Ethan roared and both he and Jesse began firing. Xander ducked, Jack met him half way and Xander vaulted into the saddle clutching the bag, he threw himself low over Jack's neck as they thundered up the trail between the rocks, bullets whistling around them and a blond waiting anxiously with bated breath.
