'You can't hurry love'
Xander ducked under the rope and reined up next to Spike, without a word he lowered his arm, Spike grasped it and swung up behind him. Behind them Danny and Warren rode bareback back to the cabin and were the first to throw saddles on their horses and mount up and give chase. Spike and Xander hurried down the trail to where the black powder ran out. Xander struck a match and tossed it into the powder; it sizzled and sparked and sputtered into life snaking it's way back along the trail to where Spike had left the dynamite in the rocks.
Danny and Warren pounded along the trail after Xander and Spike and hit the rope stretched between the rocks and were catapulted backward as their horses thundered on. Jack hurried on down the trail and the black powder snaked behind him.. Ethan and Jesse had just started up the trail when there was a loud explosion. Rock, dust and earth were thrown up into the air and there was a rumble of falling rock as the base was blown away and the rocky hillside collapsed onto the trail. Xander stopped and he and Spike twisted round, when the dust settled the trail was completely blocked. Xander grinned. "We made it."
"Do you think they're dead?"
"Dunno, but the trail's blocked, means they have to go up and over to follow us, either way I reckon we'll be settling into a nice hotel in Salt Lake before that happens." Spike pursed his lips and narrowed his eyes as he scrutized the blocked tail. "All the same I'll rest easier when we're in Salt Lake." Xander nodded and they rode on. When they hit the flat, open land Jack settled into an easy canter. Spike kept twisting round and looking behind them, but there was no sign of pursuit. Several minutes past and Spike had begun to relax when there came the first crack of a rifle shot.
Spike twisted round as the shot fell far short, but there they were in the distance Ethan and Jesse riding hell for leather after them. Jack put his head down and broke into a gallop and their headlong flight to Salt Lake began.
More shots rang out and Jack strained and put all he had into out running the horses behind. The shots whistled through the air and continued to fall just short of the black horse and his desperate riders. Jack had been carrying two men for days and the combined weight on his back began to take it's toll and he lost ground to the pursuing horses behind, nearer and nearer they came with every stride. There was another rifle shot and this time the bullet whined passed Spike's ear and both Xander and Spike lent forward. More shots rang out and Jack felt the breeze from a bullet as it passed his head.
Another shot and Jack's pace faltered, the brave horse threw up his head and staggered and then crashed onto his side and lay still.
Xander and Spike were thrown clear of the stricken horse. Xander scrambled to Jack's side and cradled his head. "Those bastards shot Jack, they've killed my horse!" He wailed, Spike scrambled beside him. "Aww that's a shame, sure hope he didn't feel anything." Xander petted the black head. "He was the best horse I ever had," he paused. "he was the only horse I ever had." Spike looked at the fallen horse and his eyes narrowed. "Can't see no bullet holes, no blood either, hey he's still breathin'," Jack held his breath. "uh now he's not." Xander wailed louder, Spike rolled his eyes.
Bullets kicked up the dust round them, Xander narrowed his eyes. "Those filthy bastards!" He yanked his rifle off his saddle and staggered to his feet, Spike lunged at him. "Are you deranged? Don't stand up!" Xander walked several steps, Spike grabbed at him. "Come back you lousy bum!" Xander shouldered his rifle and began to shoot.
Now truth be told, Xander wasn't a very good shot, in fact between him and Spike the blond won hands down. Xander's bullets went wide, Ethan and Jesse's didn't. The first hit Xander in the arm, the second in the shoulder and spun him around another tore into his thigh and sent him crashing to the ground. Spike scrambled to him. "Told you, you crazy idiot!" He grabbed the rifle, Jesse and Ethan were almost on him as he knelt up on one knee. Spike's first shot tore into Jesse's chest and he tumbled dead from the saddle, the second got old man Rayne between the eyes, he threw up his arms and fell backward from his horse. Spike tossed the rifle down and scrambled to Xander and cradled his head in his lap and stroked his cheek.
Xander opened his eyes and coughed dramatically. "We nearly made it didn't we Spike?" He wheezed. "We sure enough did, I can see salt Lake City over there." Spike gently inspected his wounds. "I'm sorry Spike," he grasped his hand, "I guess I'm done for." Spike frowned. "Xander you ain't hurt that bad, the bullet went straight through your arm, your thigh's a flesh wound and your shoulder will mend, ain't even much blood." Xander wheezed. "Must be a wound you missed 'cos I feel myself slipping away." Spike looked. "Don't think so."
"I know you're tryin' to make it sound better Spike."
"No I'm not."
"Spike, I'm dying and that's a fact." Xander stated firmly.
Spike rolled his eyes. "Fine you're dying," he looked away. "stubborn bastard," he muttered under his breath. Xander patted his hand. "Get me nearer Jack, I want to say goodbye." Spike moved him closer to the horse, Xander patted his neck. "I'm sorry Jack, I'm sorry for callin' you a bum," he coughed. "and for threatening to sell you for dog meat and getting you killed." Spike shook his head. "Spike, Spike pass me the bag of money I want to hold it while I pass over." Spike grasped the bag and shoved it into his hands and Xander cradled it to his chest. "Spike do me one last favor?" Spike sighed. "Fine, what is it?"
"Bury me with the money."
"Bury. Me. With. The . Money."
"Are you mad?" Spike scowled. "I ain't burying you with thirty thousand dollars."
"Thirty, we gave ten thousand to that nice Jewish couple."
Xander grunted. "It's my money, I want burying with it," he tightened his grip on the bag. Spike wrested it from him. "Why? You'll be dead isn't as though you can spend it."
Xander made a grab for the bag, Spike pulled it away, Xander scowled. "It's mine, I stole it fair and square." Spike pushed his head off his lap and stood. "And I stole it from you, reckon it's mine now. Besides you're dying." Xander spluttered. "You lousy Limey, it's mine!" Spike stepped away. "Nope it's mine." Spike countered.
Spike walked away a couple of steps, Xander crawled after him. "Come back you lousy, blond bastard."
"You want the money Xander, you're gonna have to come and get it." Spike shook the bag at him. Xander crawled a bit further. "I'm gonna kick your skinny butt!" Xander staggered to his feet and lurched after Spike, Spike shook his butt at him. "Come and get it cowboy." Xander lurched and staggered along with Spike just keeping out of range and teasing him with the bag.
Jack flicked his ears and took a gulp of air, the shooting had stopped, he raised his head a little. Right, seemed safe enough now, he stood and shook himself. Wait till he told Cleopatra and Junior about this. He looked at Xander lurching and staggering along and the blond teasing him with the bag. They weren't a bad pair as masters went, and he'd been touched, truly by Xander's reaction to his 'death', he even felt a bit sorry for having fooled them but hey, there came a time when a horse had to do what a horse had to do and now he had a family to think of. He gave a snort and plodded along behind them to Salt Lake City.
