Summary: AU. This story is a follow-up to Carnivale Mystique.
At the ending of Carnivale, Willow vowed to spend her life looking for her lost
friend and that is just what she has done. Now, after nearly 40 years, she and
the carnival cross paths again. Can she finally get the answers she needs and
protect her granddaughter from falling victim to the special allure of the carnival?
During the telling of this story there will be flashback chapters that tell how Spike
and Xander adjusted to their roles of master and pet.

Note: If you haven't read Carnivale Mystique or have forgotten the story,
this prologue is a very brief summary of the story.

Thanks and credit to silk_labyrinth for betaing the spelling, punctuation and

Unrelated note. At the turn of the century, my greatgrandparents and their three sons
traveled around the Midwest with a small sideshow they owned. This carousel was
the pride of that show. The man in the white shirt is Aaron Scott, my greatgrandfather
the small boy to his left was my grandfather.

Carnivale Mystique.

This is the story of Xander and his friends, Jesse, Buffy and Willow and how
their lives are turned upside down when a mysterious carnival appears one
autumn day in Kutter's Field at the edge of town.

This is their senior year at Sunnydale High, and although the small group of
friends has been together for years, they find that when the chips are down,
they really don't know each other as well as they thought.

From the first moment Xander sees the carnival setting up, he finds himself
inexplicably obsessed by it. The others see the travelling show as a temporary
reprieve from their boredom and they all plan to attend opening night.

Beginning the first night, the evil of the carnival seems to touch everyone who
comes in contact with it and we quickly learn that all of the friends are hiding
secrets of their own.

Jesse's secret is that his developing interest in sex has taken a dark turn
that borders on perversion. The carnival draws him in with the offer of
sexual pleasure through forbidden deviance and he gets exactly what he wants.
Unfortunately, his curiosity costs him his life when Spike drains and turns him.

Willow's secret is her dabbling in magic. In Giles, she finds a teacher,
a friend and maybe more. She wrongly carries the weight of her schoolmates'
deaths on her shoulders, convinced that only she and her magic could have
stopped the carnival.

Buffy's secret is, of course, that she is the slayer. She is inexperienced and unsure
and the challenge of the carnival is her first and greatest test. Her next biggest
struggle is fighting her sick attraction to the sexually deviant owner, Angel.
Her innocence of life is her weakness and, for a while, she is lured towards
his allure and sexual power. He uses her in humiliating and disgusting ways
for his own pleasure then kicks her aside. Although she is hurt and embarrassed,
it is the wake-up call she needed and she throws herself into the fight.

Xander's secret is that once he has meets Spike, his destiny is set. He has a
choice to make. Does he stay with his friends and stand against the carnival
even through the possibility that his lover will die, or does he make the giant
leap of faith and go with a man who is evil personified? Xander's decision
is made and his fate sealed when he finds Jesse turned and having sex with
Spike. By dusting his lifelong best friend, he has chosen.

From the first day the carnival arrives, townspeople begin to disappear and
die in gruesome and unnatural ways. When schoolmates, Larry and
Harmony also come up missing, the friends know it is time to take action.

As Watcher, Giles determines that the carnival must be destroyed. In the last
chapters of the story the small band of would-be heroes prepare to burn it down
only to find that Xander has defected and returned to the blond vampire. They
try to save him at the same time they prepare their deadly assault on the carnival.

Unable to locate him, Giles insists they proceed without knowing his fate.
Reluctantly, Willow and the others are convinced but as they rush to the field to
execute their plan, they find Xander and the carnival gone. All traces of the show
have disappeared into thin air as though it never existed.

Willow, more than any of the others, is crushed at the loss of her friend and
she vows to spend the rest of her life searching for him. Which, sadly is just
what she has done.

Our story begins January 1. Hope you can join me then.
