Summary: AU. This story is a follow-up to Carnivale Mystique.
At the ending of Carnivale, Willow vowed to spend her life looking for her lost
friend and that is just what she has done. Now, after nearly 40 years, she and
the carnival cross paths again. Can she finally get the answers she needs and
protect her granddaughter from falling victim to the special allure of the carnival?
During the telling of this story will be flashback chapters that tell how Spike
and Xander adjusted to their roles of master and pet.

Thanks and credit to silk_labyrinth for betaing the spelling, punctuation and
finding wandering boo boos.

As always, thanks to the wonderful Petxnd for her friendship and her banners that
put the perfect visual to my words.

Xani sipped the rest of her cocoa while her mind swirled with disconnected thoughts.
Once the initial humiliation wore off, a million questions popped into her mind.
Some of them, like 'What do they do together?' or 'Do they take off their clothes
and touch each other?' were just too teeth-rattling to find the words for, but other
questions pressed for answers.

"Alex, when we first met, you called me Willow. My gramma's name is Willow.
Do you know her?"

Xander studied the familiarity in the young girl's face and a sad, almost wistful smile
crossed his lips. What could he say? How could he answer that without stirring
up a cauldron of queries that had no logical, believable answer in the real world.
In Xani's world.

"You know what? I think we need to get you home before your grandma calls
out the Mounties and organizes a search party to look for you. Why don't I grab
your bag and we can stop by to tell Spike that I am going to walk you home. It's
already dark and you shouldn't be on your own."

Xani glanced around the small cluttered trailer and felt relieved. There was no way
she could imagine living here. It was cramped, dusty and, frankly, there was an odd
musty smell emanating from the direction of the bedroom. The trailer, in her opinion,
needed some serious fumigation.

Suddenly she was very homesick, and even the threat of her gramma punishing her
filled her with warmth and comfort in its affirmation of love and security.

"Thanks, Alex. You've been really keen about all this but I suppose it happens all the
time, what with you being so good lookin' and the romance of travellin' all around and
stuff. Girls, oh and guys, probably throw themselves at you a lot, huh?"

Xander chuckled and rose to his feet, picking up her suitcase and holding his hand out
for her to stand and join him.

"Not so much and I gotta tell you, it was very nice. I'm flattered."

As they left the trailer, Xani held back as Xander went over and spoke quietly to the
man he called Spike. When he was done, Spike smiled and they kissed, just a quick
brush of lips but Xani felt there was great passion and affection between them.
The aura, their eyes, even the quick glancing brush of their hands against each other,
it all spoke volumes as to their relationship.
They were in love. Real love.

It was the kind of burning, all-consuming love that she read about in books but had
never really seen, and Xani felt very bad for her mother and grandmother that they
had not found that. She prayed that someday she would.

"You ready?"

"Huh? Oh, sorry, I guess I was daydreaming. Yeah, I'm ready."

Xani gave Spike a quick wave of her hand and she fell in beside Xander. As they
made their way back up the long path past the other game booths, she noticed that
two of the tents were closed up, flaps down and sealed for the night. From the
look of anger that flashed across Alex's face, she could tell that this was a situation
that did not sit well with him.

Strolling past the delicious-smelling food carts, the loud musical rides and screaming
raucous crowds, Xani couldn't help but feel thrilled and proud to be next to the
best-looking guy at the carnival. Sure she knew he was unavailable, but from the
looks of envy on the other girls faces, they didn't have a clue and for Xani, that
was good enough.

By the time they reached the entrance, she was holding his hand and wearing a smug
smile of false ownership. If Xander noticed, he made no comment or objection.
Before they stepped off the grounds, a small redheaded man rushed over and grabbed
Xander by the arm, tugging him to the side. His voice was low and tinged with urgency.

"Xan, we got a fucking situation. That fucking Phil and three of his asshole fledge
buddies have some women cornered in the field off the side of the parking lot.
Jesus H. Christ, Xan, they go to slaughtering the fucking locals right here on the grounds
and we will have every law enforcement agency in the state down on our backs."

"Goddamn son of a fucking bitch!"

Xander dropped the suitcase in his hand and he pointed a finger at Xani.

"You stay here! Oz, come on. This time that prick is dust!"

Leaving the young girl in a cloud of forgotten dust, Xander and Oz bolted from the
entrance as though they had been spewed from the clown's mouth. Oz tugged
Xander's sleeve indicating which direction to go, and together they ran for the
darkened section of the side field.

Within minutes, Xander spotted the scuffle. Four vamps had circled the women
and were moving in on them quickly. Surprisingly, the women seemed to be holding
their own. By the time Xander was only 100 feet away, he was stunned when
the fledge known as Dicky for the small size of his penis, exploded into dust.
Unable to keep up, Oz was far behind.

Without pause, Xander rushed in and ripped the head off the nearest vamp before
the fledge was even aware that Xander had arrived. Out of the corner of his eye,
he saw that two of the women had the third fledge cornered and under control
which left Xander to focus on Phil. By now, Oz had caught up and was gasping
for air. Xander indicated with a nod of the head and a wink of the eye that Oz
should stand back.

Phil's face had shifted and he flashed a fang at the lowly human who dared to
challenge him.

"Well, well, what have we here? Looks like the Master's fucking little human lap
dog wants to play. Come on, puppy, I've been wanting a piece of you for a long time."

Xander never took his eyes off the slimy vamp who was crouched and easing around in
a posture that telegraphed his intent to attack. Xander reserved his response. Phil
was not a fledge. He had nearly twenty years under his belt as a vampire, and in most
cases that would have been a concern, but Xander wasn't worried.

He had almost forty years as a master's pet. Bonded by blood and fortified by years
of experience and the mystical gifts of the magic that belonging to a master vampire
had imparted. He was still human, but he was more. He was Spike's human.

"You've fucked up, Phil. You overstepped and now I'm going to dust you."

Phil roared as though he had just heard the best 'donkey and parrot walk into a bar'
joke in the world.

"Bring it on, Xander. I might just let you live for a minute or two before I kill you.
Your fucking agony will taste delicious!"

Watching in stunned silence, Willow, Hope and Connie sat clumped together in the
wet grass with their arms tightly woven around each other. Like riding a bike, the old
skills of vampire staking had come back to Willow in her time of need and she had
easily dispatched the first as he attacked.

The second one had been more of a challenge but after Hope shocked the shit out of
her by leaping on his back and riding him around in a circle like a tethered pony, Willow
raised her stake and waited. On the next flailing round, she plunged the sharp piece
of wood in and Hope tumbled to the ground on a cloud of dust and a litany of
"Shit..shit...shit..shit!" shouted by Connie in the background.

At almost the same instant, the third exploded and they realized that help had arrived.
When their rescuer squared off with the last vamp standing, Willow couldn't believe
her eyes. Even under the cloak of darkness she knew, and when the vampire called
him by name, she nearly fainted.

The ensuing battle was fast and furious and, Willow could tell, no real challenge for
Xander. His still-youthful body was strong and confident, his punches rapid fire and his
kicks landed blow after staggering blow. The vampire he called Phil was quickly realizing
he had fucked up. After another boot to the mouth, Phil spit blood and held up his hand
in defeat.

"Fuck, damn, Xan. You know I didn't mean no harm. Christ, you broke my fuckin'
back! Come on, buddy, help me up. We'll call it a draw."

The women watched as the young man, neither winded nor sweating, reached down
for the extended hand of the whipped and bloody fiend. With a smile on his face
he gripped Phil's hand, jerked him straight up and before Phil's feet could find
purchase on the ground, Xander ripped his head from his shoulders and watched as
the dust floated to settle in the grass.

Xander spun around at the sound of the familiar voice.
