"Morning, gentlemen. Can I get you something to drink?"
Spike tore his attention from his mousy companion, and he looked up at
the waitress and her pointlessly scanty uniform. He really was thirsty.
Sitting in this hot, blazing sun was fucking unbearable but without Xander
to check the condition of the dispensers and the serving glasses, he wasn't
sure he could risk it. Finally, as he was about to dismiss her, Teddy spoke up.
"Why don't you bring us a couple of bottles of water. Thanks."
When the smiling girl was out of earshot, Teddy leaned over conspiratorially
"The bottles are sealed and you just can't be too careful about germs in
unknown places. You probably think I'm paranoid but...."
"No! No, you are exactly right. I agree completely."
Despite himself, Spike felt a kinship with this pathetic creature. The insecurities
he usually kept buried took a masochistic and perverse pleasure in torturing
him with all the ways that a love story could go wrong. With one last glance
over at Xander, a young man he knew could do better than him, Spike gave all
his attention over to the tale of doomed romance and promise.
"So, what happened? Why did he call off the wedding?"
Teddy sighed, giving the moment dramatic pause, before beginning.
"I guess we were just too different. You know they say opposites attract and
unfortunately, that is true. It is a novelty and when the novelty wears off so does
the attraction. Juan is everything I am not. We met at work, which, in itself
is always a mistake. He is tall, dark, Latino, and built like a mountain. And the sex!
Damn, he could make my head spin on my shoulders just like that bitch in the Exorcist.
But he grew bored. I think it was because he was, you know, experienced. And it
would be an understatement to say that I was not."
Spike shifted in his chair. The similarities to his own situation were painfully
obvious and while he wanted to hear the rest, part of him wanted to shoot
this jerk and shut him up.
"Here we are. Two bottles of cold, fresh water. I just need for one of you
gentlemen to sign and jot down your cabin number."
Spike leaned back while the cleavage-showing waitress handed him a slip
of paper. He scrawled his name and the number 501. After she left, Teddy
"Hey that's a coincidence. You are in #501? I've got the cabin right next to
Spike ignored the comment regarding their cabin assignments and he took a
moment to examine the bottle by holding it up in the sunlight. He turned it in
all directions and studied the seal on the cap to assure himself that it hadn't been
molested. When he was reasonably certain of its virginity, he unscrewed the
cap and poured a little out to rinse the rim. Finally, he took a big swallow.
Teddy had followed suit and copied all his actions.
"God, that was good. I don't ever remember the sun feeling this fucking hot.
So, please, continue. You were saying that Juan was a mountain."
Teddy nodded and put a stern look on his soft features. He then took one
more big swallow and set his bottle down.
"Well, like I said, in the beginning everything was great. I tend to be a bit...
Teddy marveled at the man's insight.
"Yes! That's it. Quirky. So at first, he thought my quirks were cute and he
actually catered to me. He said he loved my little silly ways. As time went
on, my quirks lost their appeal and got on his nerves. At times he could be...."
Spike waited for Teddy to finish his statement, but it was beginning to seem
that he wouldn't and for some odd reason, it felt very important to Spike to
"He could be what?"
Teddy dropped his face in shame.
"Abusive. It wasn't always his fault. Sometimes I would say stuff that pissed
him off or I would make mistakes that he had corrected me on a dozen times
before. And usually it wasn't serious. Just a shove or a push. He didn't actually
hurt me unless he had been drinking or he was really stressed out."
Spike was stunned. The law enforcer in him wanted the scoundrel arrested,
tried and fried immediately.
"Why didn't you call the authorities? He should have been locked up. Did
you take out an order of protection against him? Well, at least you were smart
enough to send the bum packing, and good on you for taking this holiday."
Teddy sighed and drank the last of his water.
"We broke up because he dumped me. I knew he was fucking at least five other
guys but I was willing to overlook that. I begged him to stay. I actually got down
on my knees and I begged. He moved out of our home and moved in with his
Spike wondered if he would beg if Xander threatened to leave. Yeah, he knew
with no doubt that he would. He reached over but stopped short of actually
touching Teddy's hand in condolence.
"The best thing to do is put all that behind you. Try to forget him. This ship is
full of men. Pick one out and have a great time. Wipe Juan from your brain.
Don't even think about what he is up to today."
"He is getting a blow job."
Teddy held his left hand up to shield the bright sun from his eyes and with his right
he pointed over to the far side of the pool. When Spike realized where he was
indicating, he noticed a large dark man sprawled out on a lounge chair. He had a
colorful beach towel over his lap and a man kneeling between his legs.
"You came on this cruise knowing he was going to be here?"
Teddy shrugged and continued to squint and study the subtle motion of the rainbow
patterned towel as it moved up and down in a languid rhythm. No one else seemed
aware of what was happening or maybe they just didn't care.
"It's a free country. Besides, I really think that once he gets all this wild stuff out
of his system, he will come back to me. We are meant to be together. I love him."
Before Spike could voice his shocked disapproval, he was startled by a sudden
spray of hot, chorine smelling water being splattered all over his face and chest.
When he turned, he saw Xander gripping the arms of his chair and leaning over,
dripping water from his thick brown hair. His smile was beaming and without
hesitation he lowered his face and planted a kiss of possession on Spike's lips.
"You two looked so serious over here I thought I better come over and see
what's going on. Hi. I'm Xander."
Teddy took the offered hand and shook it. At the same time he scooted his chair
back slightly to put a bit more space between his seat and Spike's.
"Hi, Xander. I'm Teddy. I have the cabin next to you. Spike and I were just
talking about what a nice ship this is."
Xander squatted down in front of Spike. He didn't know if the ship really was
the subject of their conversation but he could see that Spike was unsettled.
He placed his hot, wet hands over Spike's and made sure his lover was looking
into his face.
"It is a nice ship and right now, Spike and I are going to explore it a bit, aren't we
sweetie? I need to go back and change. Why don't you come along and help
me? I'm sure Teddy here will excuse us."
As if hypnotized, Spike rose to his feet. He felt the love in his boy's touch and
he suddenly wanted very much to leave Teddy and his tale of woe behind. So
without even a goodbye, Spike let Xander lead him away.
