James gorgeous

As unbelievable as it sounds.....it's apparently a true deal.

*shakes head in disgust*

This was first mentioned some time ago and is as crazy an idea now as it was then. No doubt the movie will be the same 'block buster' as the origianal Kirstie Swanson/Rutger Hauer (and I an DEEPLY ashamed he was in it!) debacle. It behoves every Spike, Xander fan to boycott the movie!!

no I cant believe they are doing this!!! most remakes are done 10 20 years after whatever has ended, this is too soon we all remember the characters and writing style too much. I am deeply shamed that Joss isn't even going to be involved, if they asked him he would have made them stop it. NO-ONE can replace James Marsters, Nicholas Brendon or any of them !

I agree on the too soon. It's only been seven years since it stop airing (well, new episodes). The original is still too fresh in our minds. Reboots, when they work, are usually revisiting something that was a few decades ago, not a few years.

Since it's a reboot of the Buffy movie there will be nothing from the TV series in it. None of the other characters (she'll still have parents just not Joyce and Hank), no Sunnydale or Hellmouth - I know there was a Watcher in the movie but is the CoW something that only the series can claim? Did she even have a last name in the movie - Buffy Winters anyone?

The writer is an actress named Whit Anderson - does she see herself playing Buffy? The ultimate Mary Sue?

I hear that Buffy will be older, no longer a high school girl but she will have destined love which will probably be another vampire (no Spike or Angel). I wonder if they'll keep Pike from the movie?

I just pray they won't try to duplicate any of the main characters (although I guess a redux of Buffy, herself, is unavoidable)

There's no way ANYONE will be able to come close to the rest of the original characters, the way they were portrayed by James Marsters, etc. It would be a travesty to even try.

Hell, the whole movie idea is a travesty anyway. Why didn't someone (yes, I'm looking at YOU, Joss) plan this years ago, when the TV actors would have still been young enough to do it themselves?

I heard he wanted to make a movie but the timing was never right, then he moved on to other things. But you know I'm gutted by the whole idea - just makes me feel so sick.

To be fair even if Joss had wanted to make a movie there are all sorts of hurdles to be passed before a project is greenlit.

Yet another reboot. Eh. I'm not really all that bothered. I thought the movie was adorable, and i loved the series. Since this is the movie reboot rather than the series, it bothers me even less, since the movie and the series were not very similar.

I'll dl it, for sure - why not? I watched the Star Trek reboot, too, even though the original was one of my first true fandoms.

I hated it - i got over it.

I hated it - i got over it. I still haven't :(

Wow, my fellow fans, that's a little harsher of a reaction than I'd expect. You're all entitled to your opinions and actions, of course, but I fully plan to give it a chance. I love Joss, I love Buffy... and I don't see any problem with loving the new movie if it's good.

I've read thousands of stories in the Buffy fandom... I'm pretty sure that Joss didn't write them all, and yet there are still many amazing ones that have been created. By the sheer number of times "reboot" was bandied about in the articles, it seems clear that they are not in any way intending to replace the TV series. Now, it may suck on its own merits, I haven't seen any hints about the plot/universe... and I'll avoid it if it does, but not simply because Joss (who has moved on) isn't behind it. I see a lot of movies that Joss is not involved in.

But, y'know, I liked the original movie, cheesy as it was. I'd love for some great new characters to be introduced and am looking forward to excellent opportunities for crossovers.

This exactly! It's a reboot of the movie, not the tv series, so already it's very different.

And fanfiction is pretty much endless rebooting of the original concept. I'll watch it, it might be fun. It might suck. Either way, it won't diminish the show in any way.

This! It may suck, but it does that on its own. And hey, who knows, maybe it'll end up like the Star Trek reboot, and be relatively good. And, it's a reboot of the movie, not the show, so...eh.

Now, it may suck on its own merits, I haven't seen any hints about the plot/universe... and I'll avoid it if it does, but not simply because Joss (who has moved on) isn't behind it. I see a lot of movies that Joss is not involved in.

And, I'll be honest. I have, uh, issues with the show (and other Joss productions, namely his usage of PoC. While he is good at gender he kind of sucks at intersections of race and class). While I seriously doubt that a movie rebooted from the Buffy 'verse will be any better, it can't be much worse.
25th-Nov-2010 02:27 am (UTC)
Honestly, I'm not that bothered by the idea. It's a reboot of the movie, not the show. And, uh, re the casting, and lack of 'original cast'...do I really want to see Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon and Alyson Hannigan trying to play high school students? Probably not. It would be weird.

It might suck, but it will suck on its own merit. Conversely it may be kind of good.

Supposedly this Buffy will no longer be a high school girl. I even read that Kristy Swanson wants to be involved. As an older woman I think it would be fun to see a woman of a certain age still being able to kick butt but I doubt, knowing how Hollywood is skewing its product to teenagers and young adults, that that would happen though Helen Mirren was fantastic in "Red".

25th-Nov-2010 08:38 pm (UTC)
I had missed that part. So yes, in that case it would be possible for the cast to return. But if it was a high school reboot, then...not so much, I think. I'm not arguing against having an older cast, more like having 30 somethings (or so, I'm guessing) playing 16-18 year-olds
25th-Nov-2010 09:19 pm (UTC)
The cast can't return as they (besides Buffy) were all created for the TV show. This is a reboot of the movie so no Sunnydale, Hellmouth or Willow or Xander etc. She had parents but they weren't Hank or Joyce. This Whit Anderson must use that movie and forget everything about the TV series. Maybe she can fix some of the things I thought ME got wrong in the series (see here).

25th-Nov-2010 10:20 pm (UTC)
I know that. I've seen (and own) the movie. My comment on the original cast was more on the fact that I think article/OP remarked on the fact that the TV show cast won't be in this new movie. However if it does not take place in high school, the TV cast or Kristy Swanson could, in theory, fit, either as Buffy, or as friends of sorts (regardless if the names stay the same. I am assuming that at some point, Buffy would make friends in a movie. I think she had at least a friend in the movie at some point and Luke Perry) TBH, I think it wouldn't be a smart move to have any previous cast members of the movie or show re-appearing just from the sake of people drawing comparisons, unless it's a cameo, but I'm not casting so who knows.

I think not only Anderson, but fandom in general has to remember that it is a reboot of the movie, and forget the TV series.

Luke Perry played Pike (an earlier human version of Spike?) and was the only character I liked. It would be nice to see a version of him.

The news is creating a lot of fuss over something that may never see the light of day.
