Following an acrimonious divorce Joyce Emmerson takes her two boys William (18) and Jesse (15) to live with her father Rory an amateur taxidermist in the run down Californian coastal resort of Santa Carla. Here William falls for the mysterious Xander.
It is a soft night with a warm breeze skimming over the ocean. The moon reflects in the black waves and on the white surf as it rolls and foams onto the sandy beach. Santa Carla is heaving with its share of locals and tourists.
Santa Carla, the quintessential beach town. Its famous Boardwalk.
This is where it is all happening on a warm Summer's night.
The Amusement Park.
A cacophony of Calliope music, noise, laughter. A kaleidoscope of bright, garish lights and crowds of people. Mostly young, Some not. Arcades. Thrill rides.
The carousel spins merrily. Brightly painted horses move up and down on poles as they spin. Children and adults laughing under the bright lights as they ride. A group of teenagers ride. They look out of place in their torn denim and swastika tattoos. The Beach Nazis, a tough gang that like to think they rule the beach. Under their denim vests they wear T-shirts that proclaim 'My Beach, My Wave'. Their leader Riley, is almost twenty. A tough young man with light-brown hair with reddish highlights, clean-cut features and bare arms bulging with muscles. He shares a horse with his girl, Buffy. A slim, pretty girl with mid-length, bottle-blond hair, in a floral skirt, gypsy blouse and fringed shawl. They laugh and kiss as the gang of three or four watch from other horses.
On the other side of the carousel three boys approach, behind a fourth. They're young perhaps seventeen, eighteen. Two are short. One with dark shoulder length hair and the other with short, vibrant orange hair.
They are Lindsey and Oz.
The third is taller, with tawny, Wham hair.
He is Gabriel.
The fourth is obviously the leader. Older, perhaps nineteen or twenty . Dark, tall, well built. His hair is short, spiky and gelled on the top. A low brow gives him an almost permanent glower. He has a mysterious, Satanic handsomeness. He is Liam. All four have a distinctive dress.
This gang is known as the Lost Boys. They jump onto the carousel and push their way through the jumping horses. They laugh with the riders and flirt with the girls, they appear friendly, non-threatening and strangely compelling.
Buffy openly casts an appreciate eye at Liam, smiling and looking at him under her lashes. He reaches out his hand, smiling back and touches her cheek. He's not really flirting, just being chivalrous and pissing off Riley. Buffy's not his type.
Riley perceives his move as an insult and scowling with anger glares at him and starts to dismount the horse. Buffy catches at his arm.
"Leave it Riley." She says urgently.
Liam gives a slow smile and turns away and continues to push through the horses. Behind him his gang follows. Greg takes his anger out on the shortest member of the gang, Oz. Deliberately shoves and trips him. Oz falls heavily with a yelp.
"Fucking weirdos." Riley snarls.
