Hoping someone remembers

Hi lovely community,

I am seeking an old story, but my recollection is vague.

This is a human AU set in the Roman era post Hadrian
Xander is a Roman soldier. Spike is a young man from a northern tribes who is a slave (?) or war booty (?) They start off as enemies - hardly able to communicate due to language barriers.
They end up helping each other. Story was fairly long.
